Workshop Operative – Memorial Lettering & Preparation
Role Purpose:
To prepare memorials for installation by applying lettering stencils and fitting nut and bolt systems so they are ready for the fixing team to take on site. This role is hands-on and requires accuracy, attention to detail, and care to ensure every memorial leaves the workshop correctly prepared.
Key Responsibilities1. Stencil Application for Lettering
* Prepare and clean memorial surfaces ready for stencil application.
* Accurately position and apply pre-cut stencils to memorials, following layout sheets and instructions.
* Check all names, dates, and wording match the approved layout before passing the memorial to the sandblasting or finishing stage.
* Assist with basic finishing tasks after blasting, such as peeling stencils and checking for errors or imperfections.
2. Preparing Memorials for Fixing
* Install nut and bolt fixing systems into memorials so they are ready for safe installation on site.
* Fit bases, dowels, or other standard components required for secure fixing.
* Inspect memorials for chips, marks, or defects and report any issues to the workshop manager.
* Ensure memorials are fully prepared and staged in the correct area for collection by the fixers.
3. Workshop Organisation & Safety
* Keep the workshop clean, organised, and free from hazards.
* Follow all health and safety guidelines when handling stone, tools, and equipment.
* Assist in unloading, moving, and storing memorials safely using lifting equipment where needed.
4. Communication & Teamwork
* Work closely with office staff and fixers to meet preparation deadlines.
* Report any missing parts, errors, or potential delays immediately.
* Support other workshop tasks when required to ensure smooth workflow.
Skills & Experience
* No previous experience required — full training will be provided.
* Good attention to detail, especially when handling names, dates, and stencils.
* Practical, hands-on approach with willingness to learn workshop techniques.
* Ability to work safely and carefully with heavy materials.
* Good teamwork and communication skills.
Performance Expectations
* Stencils are applied accurately with zero spelling or layout errors.
* All memorials are fitted with the correct nut and bolt systems and ready for installation on time.
* Workshop area remains tidy and safe.
* Effective communication to prevent delays or mistakes.
