Weare looking to recruit an experienced, resourceful Maxillo-Facial Prosthetist/ Reconstructive Scientist to join our Dental laboratory team within a busyand vibrant dental teaching hospital.

Ourlaboratory employs 24 GDC Registered Dental Technicians to provide a fullrange of services to the hospital including Prosthodontics, Orthodontics,Conservation and Maxillo-facial technology. Current Maxillo-facial servicespredominantly (but not exclusively) include maxillofacial prosthetics(adhesive and implant retained), obturation supporting facial prostheses,nipple prostheses, nasal cavity stents, keloid splints.

Thesuccessful candidate will provide specialist clinical technical services topatients predominantly in the context of cranio-maxillofacial prosthetics,palliative care for head and neck cancer patients and patients with severedisfigurements designing and producing custom-made facial and body prosthesesfor their rehabilitation.

Withan existing 3D surgical planning and imaging service also based at LeedsDental Institute for the benefit of various surgical specialities plus otherdigital capabilities within the dental laboratories, there is significantscope to learn from and work collaboratively with other technical staff usingcomplex surgical planning software in the digital design and manufacture ofanatomical models, surgical cutting guides, implantable or wearable bespokemedical devices.


Main duties of the job

Applicationsare invited from suitably qualified GDC Registrants (Dental Technology) withrelevant post qualification experience within Maxillo facial technology.

Essentialqualifications include an entry level qualification in Dental Technology (BScor historical equivalent) plus apost-graduate level Maxillo-facial Technology Qualification; MSc inReconstructive Science / Craniofacial Technology or recognised equivalenthistorical Advanced qualification/s in Maxillo- facial Technology

Candidateswill need to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity, highly specialisedknowledge of relevant technical and clinical procedures includingconventional methodology as well as knowledge and understanding of digitalworkflows, good communication and organisational skills and a commitment tomaintaining a high quality, broad ranging service within limited resources.Excellent time management skills will be required to balance the many demandsof the job managing own technical / clinical workload whilst also ensuringown departments resources including equipment and materials stocks areeffectively maintained and ordered when required.

Short-listedcandidates will be invited to a bench test and interview currently expectedto be held late July 2025. The interview process will also include giving a 10 - 15 minute power-pointpresentation to the panel and candidates will also have an opportunity toshow any examples of their own work, CPD portfolios etc

LeedsDental Institute is a renowned dental teaching hospital providing trainingfor dentists and all DCP groups including Dental Technicians. The productionlaboratory services are provided from our laboratory at the LDI for theundergraduate and post graduate dental students in addition to clinical andsurgical staff of all grades and disciplines. As part of Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust, it is situated in close proximity to Leeds GeneralInfirmary but is also based within the campus of Leeds University and worksin close harmony with the School of Dentistry. Whilst our Maxillo-faciallaboratory provision is a relatively small part of the overall laboratoryservices we provide, it is none-the-less an essential facility which ishighly valued by the various clinical and surgical specialties who utiliseit.

Job Title: Chief Maxillofacial Prosthetist /Reconstructive Scientist

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

To provide specialist clinicaltechnical services to patients (predominantly in the context ofcranio-maxillofacial prosthetics, palliative care for head and neck cancerpatients and patients with severe disfigurements), designing and producingcustom-made facial and body prostheses for their rehabilitation, andproviding instructions, advice and encouragement in the use and care ofappliances including the application of tissue conditioners adhesives andcleansers.

To provide specialist clinicaltechnical services (in a clinical setting, and occasionally within anoperating theatre) by taking impressions of patients body cavities or voidswhich may also necessitate prior cleansing of surgical sites and subsequentdressing of wounds.

To work collaboratively with otherclinical and technical staff in the provision of specialist clinicaltechnical services, in particular the design and manufacture of;

o Maxillofacial prosthetics (adhesiveand implant retained)

o Nipple Prostheses

o Nasal cavity stents

To perform highly complex,specialised work as required and providing advice and information toclinicians in respect of the design, function, fit and colour match of dentalor surgical appliances.

To work collaboratively withthe 3D surgical planning and imagingservice based at Leeds Dental Institute for the benefit of surgicalspecialities primarily within Leeds Teaching Hospitals, but potentiallyexpanding the service beyond the Trust.

Make a contribution in the currentand future provision of digital surgical planning including using complexsurgical planning software in the digital design and manufacture ofanatomical models, surgical cutting guides, implantable or wearable bespoke medicaldevices.

Provide occasional ad-hoc teachingsupport to the School of Dental Technology and also dental undergraduate andpost graduate courses at the LDI, commensurate to the expertise andexperience of the post holder.

Provide technical support toclinical academic staff in occasional clinical research projects

To maintain appropriate stocks ofmaterials used within the Maxillo facial technical speciality, ordering goodsas required, ensuring that they are appropriate for the purpose and bestvalue.

Thepost holder will hold a regular (typically weekly) prosthetics clinic,providing ears, noses, orbital prostheses and indwelling artificial eyes forcancer and trauma patients. This may involve taking complex facialimpressions in the clinic or operating theatre. Current service provision isapproximately 10 - 15 facial prostheses per year some of which will beimplant retained. Patients will require an average of 5 clinical visits.Prosthetics clinic may occasionally include the provision of nipple areolaprostheses for patients referred from breast or plastic surgery who haveundergone mastectomies. Approximately 5-10 patients are referred annually,requiring 2 clinical visits each and are usually provided with 2 prostheseseach.

Tocarry out a range of invasive procedures in the clinic or operating theatreincluding impression taking, fitting prosthetic abutments to implantfixtures, cleaning surgical sites and around implants and dressing wounds.Also includes the application of tissue conditioners, adhesives and cleansersand testing for tissue reaction.

Toundertake as required a broad range of laboratory based technical work inaddition to the above. This could include for example: manufacturing splints,keloid splints, eyelid weights.

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OFRESPONSIBILITY

To provide a comprehensivemaxillo-facial service within the laboratory and on clinic to majorspecialised services within the Trust, frequently performing highly complex,specialised work as required and providing advice and information to patientsand clinical staff in respect of the design, function, fit, colour match andinstructions for use of dental or surgical appliances.

To organise and be responsible forown clinical sessions taking patient referrals from consultant surgeons invarious specialities and arranging patient lists, recalls and treatment plansand often involving liaison with other members of the clinical teams. Thisincludes a weekly Facial Prosthesis clinic, and an occasional PaediatricCranio-facial clinic.

To communicate complex, sensitiveinformation in respect of the patients treatment and their prosthesis topatients and carers, entering details into the patients medical records andproducing letters and reports to patients and other clinical staff.

To provide occasional teachingsupport to the school of Dental Technology, Dental School undergraduates anddental Postgraduates as required by the Technical Services Manager andPrincipal Tutor Technician, and commensurate to the expertise and experienceof the post holder.

Organise own work schedule toensure all allocated work is completed in advance of agreed deadlines /appointments.

Represent the Maxillo-FacialLaboratory at appropriate meetings as required

To support the Dental TechnicalServices Manager in the development and implementation of policies andservices throughout the dental laboratory

To maintain materials stocks forthe Maxillo-Facial laboratory

To monitor and recordMaxillo-Facial laboratory activity / productivity and provide relevant,timely and accurate information / data as required by the Dental TechnicalServices Manager

Ensure the equipment used by theMaxillo-Facial laboratory is in safe working order, by reporting defects tothe Technical Services Manager and / or LDI Workshop and by undertakingroutine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment according to manufacturersguidelines and local policies.

To ensure compliance with theMedical Devices Regulations (MDR) within the Maxillo-Facial Laboratory,ensuring appropriate quality records are kept and procedures adhered to.

Ensure Health and safety standardsare maintained both in the clinical environment and within the Maxillo-Faciallaboratory, where technical staff use a range of potentially hazardousmaterials and equipment and may encounter highly unpleasant fumes and bodyfluids. Examples may include acids, acrylates and solvents.

To ensure that all technical workproduced by the Maxillo-Facial laboratory is of the highest standard.

To assist the Dental TechnicalServices Manager to investigate and act upon complaints regarding technicalwork.

To participate in clinical audit /clinical governance.

Support the Dental TechnicalServices Manager in the recruitment of technical staff as required,participating in interviews and the appointment process.

To contribute to the planning,development and provision of Maxillo-Facial technical services to therelevant clinical departments, in liaison with clinical and technical staff.

Where appropriate, to support andwork with the Dental Technical Services Manager in achieving theirobjectives.

Contribute to or participate inresearch activity as appropriate, including the development or refinement ofappliance designs or production procedures.

Occasional testing and evaluationof new materials, equipment and techniques for use in the laboratory.

To support the Dental TechnicalServices Manager and designated laboratory clerical officer in themaintenance of records of work allocation on the computerised dentallaboratory management information system

To undertake appropriate trainingand participate in regular appraisals to:

o maintain and develop skills andknowledge necessary for the job

o ensure that all statutoryrequirements in respect of Continuing Professional Development aresatisfied.
