The Rural and Forestry department has a national remit for delivering forestry and rural works across the business. The successful placement holder will focus on supporting one of the regional rural teams in delivering their forestry harvesting and reinvestment programme, ash dieback works, SSSI and conservation programmes, and surveying for other rural works.
Priorities for 2026/2027 include utilising these resources to support the wide‑reaching programmes delivered by our rural teams.
Main Responsibilities
* Harvesting site management
* Site reinstatement works and surveying
* Operational site assessments
* Health and safety compliance
* Supervision of site teams
* Ash dieback surveying
* Tree safety inspections
* Collating information and report writing
The Ideal Candidate
* Recently graduated with a forestry or rural related qualification
* Practical and eager to experience and lead site works as part of established rural teams
* Willingness to research and undertake tasks as requested
* Confident in carrying out surveying, supervision, leading site meetings, and reviewing health and safety procedures
* Good IT skills – specification and report writing
Details
Hours of work: 37 per week
Start Date: Autumn 2026
Contract: 12‑Month Fixed Term
Location: Wathgill Camp, Wathgill, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL11 6AH. Expectation to travel to Otterburn Training Camp, Otterburn, Northumberland (NE19 1NX) for meetings and site visits.
Nearest Train Station: Darlington Train Station, Princess Road, Darlington DL1 4AA
Travel Required: Limited UK travel as project needs dictate. Remote sites require own transport and a full driving licence.
