Role: Estimator – National Grid / Utilities / BESS Projects
Location: Remote, with travel to multiple sites (Leeds, UK Based)
Salary: £60,000-80,000 (DOE)
About the Role
To lead the preparation of accurate, competitive, and compliant cost estimates for infrastructure projects across National Grid, utilities, and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) sectors. The Estimator will play a key role in supporting bid strategies, commercial planning, and project delivery from early concept through to tender submission.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop detailed cost estimates for civil, electrical, and M&E works on projects ranging from £100k to £10M.
* Interpret drawings, specifications, and scope documents to quantify materials, labour, plant, and prelims.
* Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations and validate pricing.
* Prepare tender submissions, cost breakdowns, and pricing schedules in line with client requirements.
* Support bid/no-bid decisions and contribute to commercial risk assessments.
* Collaborate with project managers, planners, and engineers to align estimates with programme and delivery strategy.
* Maintain and update cost databases, benchmark data, and historical pricing records.
* Ensure estimates comply with National Grid frameworks, DNO standards, and BESS-specific technical requirements.
* Attend site visits and client meetings to clarify scope and validate assumptions.
* Provide post-tender support including value engineering, cost reconciliation, and handover to delivery teams.
Required Experience & Skills
* Proven experience estimating infrastructure projects within National Grid, utilities, or BESS environments.
* Strong understanding of HV/LV systems, civils, and grid connection requirements.
* Familiarity with NEC contracts, National Grid specifications, and DNO tendering processes.
* Proficient in estimating software (e.g., Causeway, Conquest, Candy) and Excel-based pricing tools.
* Commercial awareness and ability to identify cost risks and opportunities.
* Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and communication skills.
Qualifications
* Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or Engineering.
* Membership of RICS, CIOB, or equivalent (desirable).
* Full UK driving licence.
