Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex engineering and technical programmes across systems engineering, manufacturing/automation, through‑life capability and integrated logistics support. The successful candidate will combine strong technical understanding with proven project delivery skills to manage scope, schedule, cost and quality while maintaining excellent client and stakeholder relationships.
Role Accountabilities
* Lead end‑to‑end delivery of technical projects: define scope, develop plans, manage schedules, budgets, risks and issues, and ensure successful handover.
* Translate client requirements into clear technical objectives and delivery milestones.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including systems engineers, design, manufacturing, procurement, quality and subcontractors.
* Act as primary client‑facing lead: manage stakeholder expectations, provide regular programme/status reporting and elevate where necessary.
* Apply and enforce project governance, processes and standards (including configuration management, change control and assurance activities).
* Develop and maintain project documentation: plans, schedules (MS Project/Primavera), RAID logs, technical specifications and acceptance criteria.
* Implement risk mitigation actions and contingency planning to minimise impact on delivery.
* Manage subcontractor and supplier relationships, supporting procurements and contractual management as required.
* Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory and quality standards across project activities.
* Support commercial activities including estimating, resource planning and tracking billability.
* Mentor and support junior project staff; facilitate cross‑training to build internal capability.
* Contribute to continuous improvement of project management approaches and lessons learned.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Project Management or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
* Proven experience (typically 5+ years) delivering technical projects in systems engineering, manufacturing, defence or related sectors.
* Strong project management knowledge and application (PRINCE2, PMP or equivalent).
* Demonstrable experience with project planning and scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera or equivalent).
* Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with client‑facing experience.
* Solid commercial awareness: budget control, cost forecasting and invoice/billability management.
* Experience managing suppliers and supporting procurement activities.
* Strong analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
* Flexible, pragmatic approach with the ability to prioritise in a fast‑moving environment.
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience with through‑life support, integrated logistics support (ILS) or independent assurance.
* Familiarity with COTS procurement and defence procurement processes (e.g., DE&S).
* Chartered status (e.g., CEng) or relevant professional qualifications.
* Experience with relevant technical standards and regulatory frameworks.
