Waterside specialist (volunteer reservoir inspector)

Macclesfield
Canal & River Trust
Inspector
€40,000 - €60,000 a year
Posted: 1h ago
Offer description

Join our team to help monitor the four reservoirs that supply water to the Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canals. These are Toddbrook, Combs, Bosley, and Sutton.

In this role, you will assist in undertaking these inspections by monitoring water levels, reporting defects, observing any changes, and responding appropriately. You will need an eye for detail and a willingness to be trained in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the task. You will be required to record your inspection details using an app on your mobile phone or tablet.

You should be personable and able to develop relationships, as you will often be approached by members of the public with questions about the waterways. You may also need to engage with boating clubs, angling society members, and local residents. It’s a great way to stay active, as a full day walking around the reservoirs will boost your step count!

This role is ideal for those who enjoy working outdoors and are looking for a different kind of activity to support the Canal & River Trust. The key qualities we’re seeking are enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Why we want you

Our Waterside Specialists help maintain the sustainability of the waterways by developing higher-level skills through volunteering.

Volunteering with the Trust can take many forms and welcomes individuals with a range of skills, from practical to surveying, indoors and outdoors. These skills may include working alongside existing specialists or bringing new skills to our team. We offer a variety of skilled activities you could participate in.

What you will be doing

1. Supporting reservoir inspections
2. Towpath surveys
3. Specialist heritage or environmental surveys and assessments
4. Supporting major construction works or stoppages
5. Carrying out CAATS (internal qualifications) assessments
6. Performing Visitor Risk Assessments
7. Maintaining specific equipment at our museums and attractions
8. Conducting safety and service inspections

The skills you need

This role is suited for individuals with specialist skills in various professional disciplines. While we support skill development within the Trust, we are keen to welcome those with existing experience and expertise willing to contribute.

What’s in it for you

* Time outdoors
* Staying fit
* Full training provided
* Opportunity to meet new people
