We’re looking for a motivated Revenues & Benefits Assistant/Officer to join our fast paced Revenues Team within Resident and Business Support. In this vital role, you’ll help secure the income that funds essential Council services by supporting the billing, collection, and enforcement of Council Tax. You’ll be part of a high profile service responsible for major income streams including Council Tax, Business Rates, Sundry Debt and Fines — work that has a direct and meaningful impact on our community. Whether you’re an experienced officer or joining as a Revenues & Benefits Assistant, you’ll receive comprehensive training and development to grow into the role. We’re looking for people with strong customer service skills, confidence in negotiating payment arrangements, and the ability to communicate clearly with residents from all backgrounds — especially when helping maximise cash collection in challenging circumstances. If you’re passionate about supporting residents, thrive in a busy environment, and want a role where your work truly matters, we’d love to hear from you. What You’ll Need to Succeed: • Experience in delivering high quality customer service. • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Excellent attention to detail. • A proven track record in successful debt recovery. • Self motivation and the ability to work under pressure. • A collaborative, team focused approach. You will handle all aspects of Council Tax administration, including: • Negotiating payment arrangements. • Processing changes in liability. • Applying discounts and exemptions. • Applying relevant legislation to customer accounts. • Issuing refunds. The role also includes managing customer contact across multiple channels, including inbound and outbound calls as well as face to face interactions within our Contact Centre. You will be responsible for ensuring each case is handled end to end in accordance with statutory regulations, policies, and procedures, while providing high quality support to residents and maximising income collection. Knowledge of Council Tax legislation or experience within a Revenues environment would be an advantage but is not essential—full training will be provided. If this is you, this may be the opportunity you are looking for! If you would like to have an informal chat about the post, please call Hannah Whitlock on 01642 729618. Please note Middlesbrough Council do not currently offer sponsorships. Please note this post is subject to a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) Check, which includes a Verification of Criminal Record check (unspent convictions only). We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants that can show they meet all the essential criteria and have indicated they have a disability, are a looked after young person, care leaver or a veteran.
