Junior Sister/Charge Nurse, Ward 18

Are you looking for a new Challenge within Surgical Nursing?

Ward 18 is looking for an experienced registered surgical nurseto join our friendly, enthusiastic team.

Ward 18 is a 24 bedded ward, with 4 beds providing enhancedcare for our multi-speciality patients.

We care for elective pre and post-op patients who areundergoing urology, upper and lower GI, breast and gynae surgery.


Main duties of the job

Nurses will be expected to understand and implement the Trusts Values and the Nurse, Midwives and Care Staff 6 Cs.

To work according to the NMC Code and within professional guidelines and frameworks including the 6 Cs as a named nurse / key worker for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:

The assessment of care and health education needs.

The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.

To gain experience and skills in:

Clinical Practice

Facilitation and teaching

* To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
* To participate in preceptorship programmes as appropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor / role model to less experienced staff.
* To provide supervision, support and education to unqualified staff and students

Job responsibilities

To work according to the NMC Codeand relevant professional guidelines and frameworks including the 6 Cs as anamed nurse - key worker for a defined group of patients and takeresponsibility for:

The assessment of care and healtheducation needs;The development, implementation andevaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient:To demonstrate experience and skillsin: Clinical Practice Facilitation and teaching Management.

To ensure effective communicationwith patients, relatives, carers and the multidisciplinary team.

To participate in preceptorshipprogrammes as appropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor / rolemodel to less experienced staff

To provide supervision, support andeducation to junior staff, unqualified staff and students.

Develop, lead and manage a patientcentred nursing service delivered by professional staff ensuring the highestpossible standards of care

To deputise for the DepartmentalManager in her / his absence.

To manage and develop new clinicsand staff working within the area.

Contribute significantly towards thestrategic and operational development of the Unit

Support the Departmental Manger inthe recruitment and selection process of nursing staff

Support the Departmental Manager inthe monitoring of sickness absence

Enhanced Care Area Responsibilities

Deliver andcoordinate care for patients requiring Level 1plus support (e.g., post-operativepatients needing high observation, non-invasive monitoring, or increasednursing input).

Ensure enhanceddocumentation, timely assessments, and use of clinical protocols aremaintained.

Liaise with themultidisciplinary team, including surgeons, anaesthetists, outreach, andtherapies, to ensure safe and effective management of acutely unwell surgicalpatients.

Provide supervisionand training to staff in enhanced care procedures and monitoring equipment.

Patient Care Responsibilities

Acting as a Named Nurse, to maintainaccountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmesof care within the framework of team nursing.

To promote a patient focusedapproach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.

To educate patients and their carersas required where a need has been identified.

To provide information which enablespatients to make choices about adopting a healthier lifestyle.

To complete patient documentationcorrectly.

To work with the DepartmentalManager in establishing and monitoring protocols / care pathways.

To participate in the promotion andmaintenance of effective communication with patients, relatives and otherstaff.

To support peoples equality,diversity and rights at all times.

To safe guard vulnerable adults inaccordance with agreed policies and procedures.

To ensure that patient safety ismaintained by the delegation of patient care to nurses with appropriate levelof skill at all times and report any accidents / incidents to the DepartmentalManager.

Professional Development andEducation Responsibilities

To develop own teaching skills andparticipate in staff / student education programmes.

To help maintain a suitable learningenvironment for staff and act as a facilitator in the supervision and teachingof less experienced staff.

To attend Trust / local orientationprogrammes and mandatory training sessions.

To be responsible for developing andsustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness inaccordance with PREP requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio withevidence of reflective practice.

To contribute to annual appraisaland be responsible for own Personal Development Programme, supporting theDepartmental Manager in staff appraisals / PDR process..

To support the Departmental Managerin the development and implementation of nursing practice guidelines, standardsand policies.

To provide training and developmentof the junior staff, student nurses and health care assistants to ensure a highlevel of nursing care is provided to patients.

Maintains accurate records oftraining and development for all staff within the department,

Organise and provide trainingprogrammes in accordance with the needs of the department developing trainingplans annually in conjunction with the Departmental Manager.

Professional and Clinical LeadershipResponsibilities

Deputises for the DepartmentalManager and liaises with members of the multi-disciplinary team both within theorganisation and with external stakeholders, to ensure care is delivered to thepatient both effectively and efficiently

Is responsible for leading andco-ordinating the Department in the absence of the Departmental Manager

Is actively involved in thedissemination of information to all staff e.g. Team Brief, Unit meetings

Acts as an ambassador/role model forthe organisation and the nursing profession

Maintains their NMC registration,ensuring that own work and the work of other staff always adhere to the NMCcode of conduct

To promote and deliver HealthEducation within the clinical area and advise patients, relatives and others inHealth Promotion issues where necessary

Ensure that high standards of careare maintained within the department and where necessary address issues andinstigate change in conjunction with the departmental Manager

To prepare duty rota for thedepartment, providing effective and well balanced staff cover to meet therequirements of the service and ensuring presence of a suitably qualified andexperienced nurse at all times, taking onto account budgetary constraints.

To monitor the safe and effectiveuse of all equipment and the economic use of supplies.

To manage the departmental allocatedbudget effectively to remain within financial constraints.

To inform and discuss any nursingissues with Departmental Manager.

To support Departmental Manager andDirectorate management team in developing the Endoscopy Service and managingrequests for scheduling changes within the service.

To support the Departmental Managerin the day to day discipline within the department

To participate in the workforcedevelopment, selection and interviewing of nursing staff within theDirectorate.

To devise an induction programme fornew staff

Maintains the custody, checking andadministration of all drugs in accordance with the Worcestershire AcuteHospitals NHS Trust policy.

Orientates staff to the department,developing an orientation plan giving exposure to all areas.

Actively assists in theinvestigation of complaints and draft responses as required.

Is responsible for ordering stockand non-stock consumables.

Attend meetings in the absence ofthe Departmental Manager

Research and DevelopmentResponsibilities

To promote nursing practice in line withrelevant research.

To maintain an awareness ofevidence-based practice.

To contribute to research anddevelopment programmes within the ward / department.

Audit, Quality and Risk ManagementResponsibilities

To contribute to the setting andmonitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintainingstandards.

To maintain awareness of thenational, professional and local quality issue relevant to the delivery ofnursing services, e.g. Clinical Governance.

To uphold quality initiatives thatimprove customer care and enhance the interface between staff, patients, andvisitors.

To participate in the audit processfor monitoring and reviewing nursing quality.

To be aware of personalresponsibilities in relation to the maintenance of a safe environment andidentification of potential risks for all personnel, patients and visitors,taking action as and when required.

To be aware of the role of the nursein handling complaints in accordance with WAHNT policy.

To participate in maintaining aclean environment.

To have a responsibility for themaintenance and provision of equipment for all lists, being mindful ofinfection control, COSHH and Health and Safety policies and procedures.

The post holder will familiarisethemselves with relevant Trust policies and procedures and comply with these atall times.

To identify own training needs, toensure individual competence in the use of all equipment provided for use.

To maintain a safe environment and ensure all appropriate general riskassessments are carried out within 24hours of admission document and plan care accordingly e.g. manual handling,pressure risks, slips trips and falls, nutrition, safeguarding.

Resource Management Responsibilities

To develop and maintain an awarenessof budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.

To assist in the assessment andmonitoring of staffing requirements and report problems to the appropriatemanager.

In the absence of the DepartmentalManager be able to undertake clinical / shift management within the department.

Experience

* Experience at Band 5 within the speciality or related field
* Ward or Departmental management experience at Band 5 or above
* Ward or Department based teaching
* Managing clinical risk and incidents at Ward or Department level
* Clinical audit activity
* Staff appraisals and PDP formation
* Sickness absence and performance management
* Complaints handling
* Using Essence of Care standards


Qualifications

* RGN with current registration
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Evidence of Management experience and training
* Post registration qualification or experience in the speciality
* NMC recognised teaching and assessing qualification


Skills and Knowledge

* Evidence of being up to date with current NHS and professional issues
* Experience and knowledge within the speciality or related field
* Clinical credible
* Evidence of teaching and development skills
* Evidence of managing change organisations skills, leadership skills and ability to inspire and motivate others
* Awareness of health and safety issues and management of them
* Able to prioritise
* Fully aware of principles of infection control
* Are able to produce written reports and articulate concerns regarding patient care and safety issues
