Overview
We need an electrical technician to join our team to help keep our hospital environment safe and operational by supporting the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and visitors day in, day out. As an Estates Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring our hospitals remain safe, functional and comfortable. Your responsibilities will include planned maintenance, safety inspections, customer service, and flexible support for clinical teams.
Responsibilities
* Working closely with all trade groups.
* Control of contractors.
* Dealing with technical issues.
* Overseeing small project works.
* Completing monthly compliance reports.
* Communicating with staff and patients onsite.
* Arranging shutdowns for critical works.
* Ordering equipment for projects.
* Interrogating the building management system (BMS).
* Assisting Multi‑Skilled Maintenance Engineers and other staff groups in the repair, service and inspection of building, mechanical and electrical systems.
* Planned Maintenance: Executing planned maintenance tasks to keep buildings, plant and equipment in top condition.
* Safety First: Prioritising safety by conducting regular inspections and addressing potential hazards.
* Exceptional Service: Delivering outstanding customer service by responding promptly to maintenance requests.
* Flexible Support: Adapting to changing priorities and working flexibly to support clinical teams and patient care.
* Supervising and coordinating day‑to‑day electrical maintenance activities, ensuring timely completion of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive works.
* Overseeing and carrying out testing, inspection and maintenance of emergency lighting, fire alarms and life safety systems in line with BS 5266‑1:2016 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
* Ensuring electrical infrastructure, including distribution boards, critical circuits and standby power systems, is maintained to a safe and reliable standard.
* Supervising and supporting electricians and contractors, ensuring all works comply with health and safety requirements and hospital operational procedures.
* Responding to and coordinating electrical fault calls and emergencies to minimise service disruption to clinical areas.
* Maintaining accurate records of inspections, testing, repairs and statutory compliance documentation for audit and regulatory purposes.
* Contributing to risk assessments, method statements and improvement projects to enhance resilience of hospital electrical services.
Qualifications
* Advance level electrical or mechanical engineering apprenticeship (between 4 & 5 years) and a broad, post‑apprenticeship experience (5 years) of work undertaken by these trades, plus BTEC/HNC/HND qualification.
* Engineering / Building based NVQ level 3 outside of core trade, which allows the post holder to work in a multi‑skilled way. Those entering the service without these qualifications will need to complete relevant training within 12 months.
* Completed City & Guilds – Steriliser Testing for Craftsmen – Porous Load & Type "N" Bench Top Sterilisers HTM 2010.
* Completed City & Guilds – Quarterly Testing of Bench Top Sterilisers HTM 2010 / MDA DB 9804.
* Completed City & Guilds – Periodic Testing of Washer Disinfector HTM 2030 – Demonstrable experience within the decontamination field, an in‑depth technical knowledge of service, repair and testing in order to maintain compliance to the standard required by the governing regulations, knowledge of Trust rules regarding patient confidentiality.
* Steam Raising Plant & Calorifiers.
* Control Equipment.
* Building Management Systems.
* Understanding of water byelaws.
In the course of their normal duties, the postholder will have access to vulnerable people. Consequently, this position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) and the Order 2020. A Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required to check for any previous criminal convictions.
