Previous experience of working with older people, in an acute hospital or community setting is essential.
Responsibilities
* Work alongside therapists on Older Persons Medicine wards and across Acute medical wards to facilitate rehabilitation and help patients return to pre‑admission independence and function.
* Perform administrative duties as required.
* Achieve competency levels through structured in‑house training; attendance is at the discretion of the Clinical Lead.
* Speak English as necessary for the role.
Qualifications
* A qualification at NVQ 3/QCF or equivalent relevant to working in a care setting. Those lacking the qualification may demonstrate willingness to undertake equivalent training in the first year.
* Ability to drive and hold a clean driver’s licence.
* Ability to use a keyboard to access and input information into a computer‑based system.
* Ability to move and handle patients and equipment using approved techniques, and cope with exposure to bodily fluids.
Experience
* Previous work as a Therapy Assistant or equivalent (e.g., Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy Assistant, HCA, or another role involving direct patient care).
* Assessment of individuals’ function and mobility.
Desirable Experience
* Previous experience working in a hospital setting.
* Previous experience working with the elderly.
Technical Skills and Competencies
* Ability to work independently on wards and/or in patients’ homes with guidance from qualified staff.
* Effective time‑management skills.
* Ability to manage own caseload with access to qualified staff.
* Experience with manual handling equipment such as hoists, stand hoists, Samhall turner.
* Methods of gait re‑education.
* Delivering exercise programmes to individuals and groups.
Knowledge
* General knowledge of medical conditions relevant to older people, e.g., Parkinson’s disease, falls, dementia, infections.
* Desire to work with older adults.
Interpersonal Skills
* Good verbal and non‑verbal communication and ability to establish rapport with a range of people; English proficiency required.
* Ability to write results of interventions clearly and concisely with good spelling and grammar.
* Basic teaching skills.
* Team player.
Personal Attributes
* Flexible attitude and capacity to respond positively to change.
* Well‑motivated.
* Ability to take direction from senior staff.
* Recognition of boundaries of own job role.
Other Role‑Specific Requirements
* Ability to drive and hold a clean driver’s licence.
* Use of keyboard for computer systems.
* Handling patients and equipment in approved techniques, coping with bodily fluids.
Language Requirement
* Speak and write English as necessary to undertake the role.
