Position Title: Telecommunications Technician
Location: Portsmouth, VA (On‑site at Naval Medical Center)
Salary: $72,000.00
Position Summary: The Telecommunications Technician plans installations, transitions, and cutovers of network components. Establishes communications systems by installing, operating, and maintaining voice and data telecommunications network circuits and equipment. Installs fiber optic and copper cabling, voice and data information outlets and related components, communications racks, patch panels, telecommunications blocks, and IT and telecommunications wiring. The Telecommunications Technician also tests voice and data circuits using state‑of‑the‑art test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment. Involved in the operation and maintenance of voice, data and video communication systems. Provides diagnostics to maintain telecommunications equipment. Troubleshoots problems and contacts appropriate vendors for service. Researches, recommends and implements new technologies to ensure effective telecommunications services. Maintains contacts with vendors of telecommunications equipment and services regarding enhancements to or replacements for existing services and products.
Responsibilities
* Cisco 6500 series layer 3 switch.
* Assist in the telecommunications network analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance.
* Diagnose faults and effect minor repairs to telecommunication equipment.
* Install, run performance tests, modify, troubleshoot, and repair wireless and telecommunications systems.
* Responsible for integrating efforts of various engineering and other technical disciplines into a cohesive product or program involving fiber‑optic telecommunications networks.
Qualifications
* Associate degree in a related field, or a total of three years of working experience in these fields may be substituted for the academic requirement.
* Security+ certification (required).
* Three years of experience conducting network performance analysis.
* Three years of experience performing telecommunications maintenance, maintaining vendor relations, and recommending systems procurement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Voice, data, and video telecommunications systems including installation, operation, and maintenance of cabling and equipment.
* Knowledge of telecommunications system performance testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
* Installing and maintaining telecommunications cabling systems including fiber optic and copper.
* Testing voice and data circuits using diagnostic equipment.
* Diagnosing faults, isolating problem areas, and performing minor repairs on telecommunications equipment.
* Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair telecommunications systems to include voice, data, and video networks.
* Manage enterprise telecommunications infrastructure and ensure systems are operational and reliable.
* Provide diagnostics and corrective action to sustain reliable telecommunications equipment and services.
