* Full time, continuing role. Located at the Aeronautical Engineering Building (J11) on the Darlington Campus
* Contribute to Aerospace engineering teaching and research with your skills
* Base Salary HEO 6, $99,455 - $107,216 p.a. + 17% superannuation


About the opportunity


The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Technical Officer (Aerospace Engineering) to join the dynamic Technical Services team in Engineering. This is an opportunity to demonstrate your passion for practical components of Aerospace Engineering while working with leading Aerospace teaching and research teams and using state of the art aerospace technologies.

Working closely with the Staff Engineer, the successful candidate will be expected to support a range of activities, including assisting with practical classes, demonstrations, and research projects. They will also be responsible for maintaining equipment and ensuring a safe working environment. In addition, the role involves providing technical advice to both academic staff and students engaged in teaching and research, sourcing and preparing consumables for teaching purposes, and contributing to the development of safety and procedural documentation.

This role will require you to be on-site on the Darlington campus as well as the possibility of travel interstate for conferences, events, or training.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

* support the delivery of hands-on teaching and research activities within Aerospace Engineering
* install, repair, maintain, calibrate, certify, and dispose of designated technical equipment and facilities
* maintain a high level of proficiency with relevant facility equipment including flight simulators, optical tracking systems, wind tunnels, and fixed and rotary wing light aircraft, participating in experimental or teaching work involving this equipment where appropriate
* develop proficiency with relevant aeronautical manufacturing methods, e.g. composite layup, riveting, sheet metal fabrication, hand tools
* proactively engage workers, students, staff, visitors, and other technical facility users in awareness of University policies and relevant WHS compliance, legislation, standards, codes, policies, guidelines, and local provisions
* provide safety inductions, supervision, and technical advice to students conducting project work in lab spaces
* assist and coordinate the transportation/relocation of technical items as required, which can include the organisation of external contractors and service technicians.

About you

* a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or relevant field with 1-2 years of relevant hands-on experience or equivalent
* mechanical engineering skills including CAD and 3D printing experience with design for manufacture and mechanical prototyping
* mechanical fabrication skills - hands on skills with aircraft construction in composites, sheet metal fabrication, riveting, or similar
* relevant experience working in aerospace facilities, including experience in demonstrating experiments and using specialised aerospace equipment/apparatus
* relevant experience in preparing, streamlining/scaling, set up/pack down of higher educational laboratory classes, as well as experience with safety and compliance training in this workspace
* experience with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations and licensing is highly desirable
* experience with piloted or autonomous drones is not necessary but highly desirable.
