PCCU Clinical Sister

Are you an experienced Paediatric Critical Care Nurse seeking a new challenge? There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care senior leadership team.

We are a 14-bedded Paediatric Critical Care Unit comprising 8 Level 3 beds and 6 Level 2 beds. We care for children across a wide range of specialties and work closely with the Children's Medical Emergency Transport (CoMET) service for the East Midlands region.

You must be an RSCN or RN Child, adult or LD qualified nurse with substantial experience working in a Paediatric Critical Care environment at Band 6 level. You should hold a recognised Critical Care qualification and Mentors and Assessors qualification. A degree or being on a degree pathway is required.

The clinical role involves working across all shifts, leading the clinical team, and collaborating with the wider PCCU MDT. It also includes line management responsibilities and deputising for the PCCU Matron in their absence.

This is a 1 WTE position, with part-time hours considered, minimum of 10 shifts per month (28.45 hours).


Main duties of the job

Please refer to the attached job description and person specification for full details. The post holder will act as Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, requiring effective leadership, role modeling, and regular charge of the unit, maintaining high standards of care and environment.

Provide direct clinical care, support clinical and non-clinical governance, and lead a team of Band 6 and 5 nurses and administrative staff, including conducting annual appraisals and staff training.

The post requires registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Job responsibilities

See attached job description and personal specification. Nottingham Children's Hospital, located in Nottingham, is a major trauma centre with 116 inpatient beds across 8 wards, covering all specialties.

We work closely with the Emergency Department, providing frontline trauma care. The PCCU serves neurology, neurosurgery, spinal, orthopaedics, oncology, haematology, respiratory, general surgery, and rheumatology. The hospital also provides paediatric renal services, including kidney transplants and haemofiltration.

Nottingham Children's Hospital became the first in Europe to achieve Pathway to Excellence accreditation in 2020, reflecting our commitment to excellent care, strong teams, leadership, and development opportunities.

The post involves working as part of the Paediatric Critical Care nursing team, with managerial, professional, and clinical responsibilities, including 24-hour management and deputising for the PCCU Matron as delegated.


Person Specification


Training and Qualifications

* Current NMC registration RSCN or RN (Adult, Child, or Learning Disability branch)
* Paediatric Critical Care Course
* Degree in health/nursing or on a degree pathway
* Mentoring Course
* APLS
* Completion of local competency packages
* Leo course or leadership course (or scheduled attendance)
* Formal leadership and management training
* Experience with clinical benchmarking (Essence of Nursing)
* Evidence of Masters-level study
* Research training/experience
* EPALS
* GIC instructor or equivalent


Experience

* Minimum 5 years post-registration experience, including management/leadership
* Credibility in Paediatric Critical Care Nursing with specialist knowledge and clinical expertise
* Understanding of audit or research in clinical settings
* Experience in teaching groups of staff
* Knowledge of risk management and clinical governance
* Ability to lead change and implement new practices
* Effective ward or area management skills

This position is subject to DBS checks under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975.

£46,148 to £52,809 per annum, pro-rata.
