Lecturer in History of Art – Birkbeck, University of London


Job Details

Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in History of Art to join our dynamic, research‑led art history team at the School of Historical Studies in Autumn 2026. The position is a permanent, full‑time (35 hours per week) open‑ended contract at Grade LLEC, with a salary ranging from £44,247 to £60,858 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. Applicants will be based at the London campus and will teach evenings (6 – 9 pm Monday‑Friday) with daytime modules increasingly being introduced. Ref No: 2308.


Responsibilities

* Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across the history of art curriculum.
* Develop and deliver research‑led option modules at Level 6 and Level 7.
* Set up and supervise an undergraduate work‑placement module, liaising with external partners.
* Contribute to research culture and profile of the School of Historical Studies.
* Supervise and mentor students, supporting a diverse student cohort.
* Participate in departmental and college meetings and administrative duties.


Qualifications

* PhD or equivalent in History of Art, specialising in the modern period (1800 onwards).
* Evidence of a strong research record with publications, particularly on race, colonialism and their contemporary impact.
* Experience in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Ability to work with cultural organisations and establish external links.
* Effective administrative skills and proactive teamwork.
* Open to visa sponsorship.
