Structural Engineer — Hybrid Role in Construction Underwriting
We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to expand into construction underwriting. This hybrid role combines technical engineering proficiency with the ability to assess and advise on construction-related project risks. It will lead to pricing strategy and underwriting responsibility. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in structural engineering, excellent communication skills, and an interest in applying engineering expertise to insurance.
What you will do as a Structural Engineer
This is an overview and not an exhaustive list of responsibilities. Working with your line manager, you will develop your objectives but focus on the following:
Project Information Review
* General Arrangement Structural Engineering and Architectural drawings.
* Construction Method Statements, such as those for basement construction (e.g., underpinning, piling).
* Geotechnical Reports and Basement Impact Assessments or similar documentation.
* Temporary Works proposals.
* Any other complex works involved in the project.
Project Understanding and Risk Assessment
* Gain a full understanding of the project.
* Provide the Underwriting Team with concise summaries of the proposed works.
* Advise the Underwriting Team on any complexities and potential practical challenges, assisting them in understanding potential risks associated with the project.
* Liaise with the Policyholder Design Team and Contractor Team to clarify and discuss any technical or procedural aspects of the proposed works.
* Summarize findings, recommendations and risk profiling to enable you and our Underwriters to formulate and price the most appropriate insurance cover.
* Where necessary, carry out site inspections during key stages of construction, preparing concise reports to inform further underwriting decisions.
Qualifications and Skills
* Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related field.
* Professional certification (e.g., Chartered Engineer status) is preferred.
* Minimum of 15 years’ experience in structural engineering.
* Background in complex building remodelling and basements.
* Strong understanding of construction methods, geotechnical principles, and temporary works design.
* Ability to critically evaluate engineering drawings and reports.
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex principles to your audience.
* Analytical mindset with a strong attention to detail and risk assessment capabilities.
* Willingness to learn and apply underwriting principles in an engineering context.
* Proficiency in relevant engineering software and reporting tools.
