Mercian Weldcraft Ltd, trading as Special Formwork, is a well-established second-generation family business based in Aldridge, West Midlands. Operating since 1958, we specialize in manufacturing bespoke formwork products and other construction-related equipment, as well as providing subcontract laser cutting, pressing, and fabrications. Job Description
We are seeking a talented Design Engineer with experience in designing steel structures and a strong understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes. The ideal candidate will have a background in mechanical, civil, or construction engineering. The team take pride in the products the company manufactures, and we are hoping to find a candidate who shares that same enthusiasm.
This role offers a clear progression pathway to become Lead Design Engineer, working closely with and supported by the Design Director.
Key aspects
* SolidWorks 3D Modelling: Sheet metal, weldments, multi-body parts, assemblies, and drawings.
* Measuring and Drawing: Prepare parts for laser cutting when required, or problem solving in production.
* AutoCAD 2D: Intermittent use for reading client information and historic design drawings.
* Detailing & Fabrication: Produce detailed fabrication drawings and BOMs.
* Project Involvement: Participate in project meetings and work on large projects.
* Engineering Calculations: Undertake calculations for simple metal structures, focusing on steel bending, deflection, and pressure retention.
* Liaison: Collaborate with workshop fabricators.
* Software Proficiency: Use Microsoft Excel, Teams, Word, and Outlook.
* Standards Compliance: Adhere to company standards and design practices and have some working knowledge of Eurocodes and Temporary Works standards.
* Project Variety: Each project is different, ranging from tunnels to simple column formwork. Every day offers a variety of work, and all designs, even if they follow a company standard or principle, are bespoke and one-off.
Skills and Experience
* Essential: Engineering knowledge with the ability to undertake engineering calculations. Competence in 3D modelling, sheet metal design, weldments, and generating detailed and fabrication drawings.
* Desirable: Previous experience in temporary works design, formwork, falsework, and hydrostatic pressure calculations. Proficiency in beam design, beam analysis, and design calculations of steel. FEA experience is an advantage, with specific on-the-job training available in various areas for the right candidate. Practical or hands-on experience and a keen attitude to learn and be a team member.
* Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar software. Experience with AutoCAD 2D and other design software will be considered, with in-house training provided to transition to SolidWorks.
* Others: As an SME, the role is diverse, and the right candidate would integrate into the whole business if desired. There is scope for this role to also venture into sales, project estimation, and future management.
Ideal Candidate
* Demonstrates a strong understanding of sheet metal and structural weldments.
* Possesses a full understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
* Capable of leading small design projects with support from the design team.
* Eager to learn and contribute as a team member.
* Previous FEA experience will be a plus, with training offered for analysis with SolidWorks.

Education
* While formal training is an advantage, with mechanical or civil engineering degrees being desirable for candidates. Other avenues of education such as apprenticeships or on the job expertise are very much equally as desirable for this position.

* Monday – Thursday: 08:00 – 17:00
* Friday: 08:00 – 13:00
