Senior Biomedical Scientist – East of England HPV Primary Screening Service
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Cytology department has been selected as the provider of HPV primary testing for the East of England, handling up to 450,000 cervical screening samples per year on the Roche Cobas systems.
The laboratory also processes around 3,000 diagnostic cytology samples per year and is located at the modern Cotman Centre, Colney Lane.
As a member of the senior Cytopathology team you will support a comprehensive screening service, manage the daily workload, and work closely with colleagues in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput environment.
Full time: 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities
* Examine liquid‑based cervical cytology preparations, including primary screening, checking of referred cases, rapid re‑screening, and reporting negative and inadequate samples; refer other cases to Consultant Cytopathologists or an Advanced BMS Practitioner for diagnosis and management.
* Maintain and authorise fitness for clinical use of highly complex specialist microscope and analytical equipment.
* Perform clerical procedures for cervical cytology, entering reports into the database.
* Examine and quality‑check conventional and liquid‑based non‑gynaecological cytology preparations.
* Perform clerical procedures for non‑gynaecological cytology, using PAS and the patient summary care record.
* Assist in recruitment and selection of Cytopathology staff, including participation in interviews.
* Lead quality assurance activities, including: being fully conversant with Cytopathology services and applicable statutory and governance requirements; devising and maintaining a total quality management system; generating and feeding back quarterly screener, checker, and pathologist reporting profiles.
