Biomedical Design Engineer (Patient‑Specific 3D Solutions)
Location: On‑site, Vet3D
Reporting to: Senior Biomedical Technician
Salary: Dependent on experience
Role Overview
Vet3D is expanding its engineering team and is looking for a motivated Biomedical Design Engineer to help create patient‑specific surgical guides and custom implants for the orthopaedic and neurology veterinary sector. This is a hands‑on role working at the intersection of medical engineering, anatomy, and advanced 3D solutions.
You will work across a wide variety of clinical cases, supporting the full design process from interpreting surgical plans to developing guide systems and custom implants. As your skills grow, you will progress toward independently managing your own cases and contributing to the evolution of our design workflows.
This role suits someone with strong technical aptitude, an interest in anatomy, and experience with 3D CAD software. Whether your background is biomedical engineering, animal sciences, or a related field, we welcome applicants who are curious, detail‑driven, and eager to learn.
Vet3D offers a collaborative environment, access to cutting‑edge tools, and the opportunity to make a direct impact on surgical outcomes for patients across the UK and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Case Work
• Support the design of patient‑specific guide systems and custom implants based on surgical plans
• Progress toward independently managing clinical cases and communicating with planning consultants
• Maintain accurate documentation and follow established quality and safety protocols
CAD Modelling and Digital Design
• Use 3D CAD software to create, refine, and prepare models for production
• Interpret anatomical structures and CT data to support accurate modelling
• Apply design‑for‑print principles and contribute to continuous improvement of design processes
Segmentation and 3D‑Printing Support
• Assist with segmentation tasks using software such as Materialise Mimics (training provided)
• Prepare files for 3D printing and support print setup
• Check the quality of printed parts and ensure they meet internal standards
Workflow Development and Innovation
• Contribute ideas to improve workflows, including opportunities for FEA and design optimisation
• Support the integration of new tools, technologies, and engineering processes
• Participate in ongoing research projects, including publications and conference contributions

Essential
• Degree in biomedical engineering, life sciences, animal sciences, or a related discipline
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a systematic, logical manner
• Clear and confident communication skills
• Enthusiasm, initiative, and a collaborative approach
• Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (e.g., 3d Systems Freeform Geomagic, Fusion360 or Similar)
• Interest in anatomy, medical engineering, and patient‑specific design
• Willingness to learn and develop specialist skills with full training provided
Desirable
• Experience designing custom plates or implantable devices
• Knowledge of anatomy or anatomical terminology
• Experience with engineering design processes and 3D CAD development software
• Familiarity with medical design packages such as Materialise
• Understanding of FEA or interest in developing FEA capability
• Exposure to industrial 3D printing or CNC machining (2–5 axis)
Candidates with relevant experience who do not meet every point are encouraged to apply. We are committed to developing the right person.
Why Join Vet3D
• Work on varied, meaningful cases with real clinical impact
• Design both patient‑specific guides and custom implants
• Access to advanced 3D solutions and medical engineering tools
