Multi‑Skilled Maintenance Engineer
Location: Wem, Shropshire
Salary: £25 – £30 per hour, depending on experience
Hours: 37.5 working hours – start and finish times vary, include evenings and weekends; generally Monday–Friday 8:30am–4:30pm (with flexibility). Site working usually 7am–7pm. Overtime paid at enhanced rates.
The Opportunity
SWORD Engineering Ltd specialize in the recycling industry, serving major UK waste management companies as well as packaging, quarrying, logistics and local council depots. We offer an exciting role for an experienced Multi‑skilled Engineer on a dedicated engineering team in Wem, Shropshire.
Responsibilities
* Install, diagnose breakdowns and carry out repairs/maintenance at customer sites; routine planned and reactive maintenance on recycling machinery.
* Removal and relocation of heavy plant machinery; assist with plant overhauls.
* Work on conveyors, trommels, balers and other recycling equipment.
* Fit gearboxes, bearings, roller changes, housings and seals.
* Install plant and machinery, maintenance platforms, walkways and guards.
* Weld and fabricate as required.
* Communicate professionally with customers; work independently or as part of a focused team; use initiative and problem‑solving skills.
* Be workshop and site based nationally; prepared for away‑from‑home work and occasional weekends at short notice.
* Holder of a Full UK Driving Licence – essential.
The Candidate
Minimum 5 years' proven experience (ideally within recycling and/or material handling) carrying out hydraulic, mechanical and electrical diagnosis and repairs on plant machinery. Knowledge of paper balers, conveyors, shredders, motors, gearboxes, mechanical drives and industrial hydraulics is advantageous.
Qualifications & Experience
* Recognised time‑served apprenticeship (City and Guilds, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
* Metal fabrication and welding (MMA and MIG) experience; ability to interpret engineering drawings.
* Excellent fault finding and diagnosis experience on heavy plant equipment.
* Current 18th Edition electrical qualification and 3‑phase electrical breakdown experience.
* Installation and commissioning skills.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of health, safety (including COSHH) and environmental procedures.
* Professional, flexible attitude with clear communication at all levels.
* Desirable: knowledge of PLC interrogation/fault finding.
* Highly desirable: forklift truck, scissor lift and self‑propelled boom licences.
* Highly desirable: experienced banksman/slinger/signaler.
