Offer description

Applications are invited for the post of Substantive Consultant in Histopathology.

There are several posts available for the successful applicants, with potential job-sharing or less than full-time appointments. The successful applicant would join a team of 32 consultants. We work in an oligo-specialist setting - colleagues are encouraged to take part in 2-3 subspecialties, becoming part of the respective teams. In preparation for the approaching retirement of our perinatal Pathologist colleague, we especially welcome applicants with experience in paediatric/perinatal Pathology, or those willing to undertake speciality training provided in collaboration with training centres. Applications from colleagues with skin and GI specialisation are also welcomed, though other subspecialty interests can be accommodated.

Our vision is to create a large and diverse department to provide individuals with personalised and flexible working patterns to support their professional interests and development.

We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion. Additionally, people with disabilities will be offered an interview providing they meet the minimum criteria for the post. The Trust operates job share and flexible working.

Main duties of the job

The Histopathology team works in a purpose built modern, light, and airy building on a green field site which has been commended for its design and infrastructure by external assessors. It is next to the research park and university campus near the Sports Park. Each consultant has their own or a shared office with up-to-date IT equipment including voice‑recognition software.

Workload is controlled by an exit allocation system based on Royal College of Pathologists points, allowing consultants to protect SPA time and provide coverage for job‑planned activities outside routine reporting.

Our well‑equipped laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO15189:2022 standards, fully staffed and BMS cut‑up is well established. Private practice and work for HM Coroners are optional extras. A number of consultants work part‑time, and we actively encourage flexible working, utilising our new digital pathology solution, to ensure a healthy work/life balance. We train and employ advanced practitioners in dissection in Breast and Urology, and reporting in GI and Skin pathology.

As a university teaching hospital, we have developed our research and development strategy in partnership with the University of East Anglia. The successful applicant will not only have the opportunity of training the future generation of pathologists (we have up to 12 ST1‑5 trainees at any time and host FRCPath Part 2 exams every other year) but could also participate in undergraduate teaching.
