Research Scientist – Sensors (Maternity Leave Cover)
Michell Instruments, part of DwyerOmega, provides precision sensing instrumentation to industrial customers worldwide. The group has 13 R&D/manufacturing sites globally, plus subsidiary offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
We are looking for a Research Scientist focused on sensors to cover maternity leave. You will bring your knowledge of thin‑film deposition techniques and their characterisation to a multi‑disciplinary research team furthering our sensing technology to fulfil the requirements of emerging applications in gas treatment and renewable energy.
Responsibilities
* Hands‑on contributions to the development of our measurement technologies.
* Design and test improvements that will achieve the desired performance.
* Reporting and disseminating findings to members of the team.
* Collaborate with the engineering and development teams to transform research outputs into new product developments.
* Assessment of obstacles and technical hurdles to product success, including manufacturability.
* Provide technical expertise and training to other members of the team.

Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics.
Skills & Experience
* Experience of all main PVD techniques including evaporation & sputtering.
* Characterisation of thin films, understanding material properties and their importance in multilayer devices.
* Experience with sensors and associated signal processing.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Experience working in multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Comfortable with mathematics.
* Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of complex technical issues and develop cross‑functional relationships.
* Creative problem‑solving abilities, logical approach to implementation.
* Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences.
* Development of PVD processes for manufacturing lines.
* Experience in product research & development or related environment.
* Experience in design or implementation of sensing techniques.
* Application of physics/materials science and/or electronics to measurement science.
