Job Description
Job Purpose
The School of Law seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Criminal Law (Learning, Teaching and Scholarship Track). We teach Criminal Law and Evidence to students studying for the Scots law LLB and the Common Law LLB. The role involves teaching foundational and advanced modules in criminal law, criminal justice, and related subjects, primarily in the final years of our four-year honours degree. We welcome applicants with expertise in Scots law or the broader common law tradition, including criminal procedure and criminal evidence. The successful candidate will contribute to our courses, with specific responsibilities depending on their expertise. The appointment is for 18 months, starting 1st September 2025.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Deliver teaching, supervision, and assessment activities in criminal law and related subjects across the School's programmes.
* Manage course administration effectively, communicating assessment requirements and providing timely feedback.
* Contribute to curriculum development, supporting research-led and scholarly student learning and assessment.
* Utilize learning technologies to support course delivery, including blended and online formats.
* Facilitate inclusive learning environments through face-to-face and online methods, promoting student participation.
* Engage in scholarship by researching student learning and sharing findings to enhance teaching practices; participate in seminars and conferences.
* Build effective relationships with students and collaborate with student services to address diverse learning needs.
* Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, and contribute to postgraduate research supervision and training.
* Perform administrative or management duties as assigned by the Head of School.
* Participate in professional development activities.
* Undertake other duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
o PhD or equivalent professional/teaching experience in a related role.
o Sufficient knowledge in criminal law, including criminal procedure and evidence.
Skills
o Effective communication of technical material both orally and in writing.
o Ability to explain complex ideas to those with limited knowledge.
o Engagement with current practices and ongoing learning.
o Leadership and management awareness aligned with university priorities.
Experience
o Planning and progressing work within organizational guidelines.
o Knowledge of policies, practices, and external awareness.
o Up-to-date knowledge in criminal law and ability to inspire students and provide pastoral care.
Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for up to 18 months from the start date.
