A welcoming and community-driven primary school in Barnet is seeking a skilled and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 5 pupil with autism (chronological Year 6). This is a mornings-only role, ideal for an experienced practitioner who understands the complexities of autism and is confident supporting pupils with high levels of need. About the Pupil The pupil is an autistic boy working below age-related expectations and currently attending on a reduced timetable to help with emotional regulation. He has limited expressive language and is beginning to respond positively to new medication introduced to support his self-regulation. Recent behaviours include increased sensory-seeking, physical outbursts towards peers, and heightened stimming patterns such as hand-flapping. The school is committed to providing consistent, specialist support to help him feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Role Responsibilities • Provide 1:1 support each morning, following structured routines and autism-informed strategies. • Understand and respond to triggers, sensory needs, and regulation requirements. • Safely and calmly redirect behaviours, using de-escalation and positive reinforcement. • Maintain engagement through tailored activities, frequent movement breaks, and clear expectations. • Follow the school’s behaviour and safeguarding procedures, contributing to ongoing support plans. • Promote safety for the pupil and those around him during moments of dysregulation. Ideal Candidate Profile • Strong background in supporting children with autism, SEMH, or complex needs. • Skilled in de-escalation, sensory regulation, and structured intervention approaches. • Confident managing physical behaviours with calm, firm, and nurturing guidance. • Able to build trust while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries. • Reliable, resilient, and committed to helping the pupil experience success.
