Job summary

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trustare seeking a motivated and compassionate individual to join our dedicated team, providing emergency care for the people of Rotherham. Our team of doctors, ACPs and ENPs cares for over 100,000 attendances each year, encountering the full spectrum of Urgent and Emergency care in both adults and children.

This is a fixed term post to cover maternity leave.

We have a strong mixture of experienced and recently appointed consultants, driving the departments desire to provide the best evidence based care possible and would welcome particularly those with interest and experience in Ultrasound or Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

The consultant rota is a self-rostered annualised rota providing consultant shop-floor presence from 8am to midnight seven days a week. This provides ample opportunity to explore the beautiful surroundings of South Yorkshire and balance the challenges of emergency care with those outside ED.

The Urgent and Emergency Care Centre has a 6 bed glass cubicle resuscitation room, 20 Majors beds, Rapid Assessment area, separate paediatric area with 5 cubicles and a dedicated waiting room and a large Minors area where our integrated primary care service is based.


Main duties of the job

Together with consultant colleagues provide consultant led Emergency care 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Teach and train our Medical Students, Doctors in training and ACP colleagues.

Work collaboratively with our specialty colleagues to develop quality Emergency care for the people of Rotherham, In line with the Rotherham place and ICB strategy.

Continuing professional development, maintaining knowledge through professional development activities, working within and contributing to trust governance. Undertaking relevant administrative duties within the department.

Applications are welcome from those completing specialist training as well as established consultants looking for a new challenge. Both full and part time will be considered as well as job shares. Prospective candidates should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine and be GMC registered. We would welcome applications from those with a specialist interest in PEM, ambulatory care or ultrasound and are willing to be flexible with job plans to facilitate this after negotiation.

The Department

The UECC is located on the main hospital site on the same level as the surgical wards, Acute Medical Unit, theatres, critical care and radiology, giving easy access to all. Medical Same Day Emergency Care is adjacent.

The Emergency department currently uses the Meditech EPR. Total annual attendances are approximately 120,000 per year.

The department consists of

6 bed glass cubicle resus room with 1 paediatric bay

4 bed Rapid initial assessment area

20 bed Majors area

Large waiting area with 9 assessment rooms for minors including ENT/EYE specific room with slit lamp.

Separate Paediatric area with 5 assessment rooms and a separate waiting room.

Second storey offices including seminar rooms, changing rooms with showers.

Emergency and Acute Medicine are working collaboratively to develop quality services for patients presenting with acute conditions. Appointment to this post will add to the team of dedicated and highly motivated EmergencyMedicine Consultants.

The successful applicants will have wide training and experience in Emergency Medicine. The post holders will be encouraged to develop specialist interests to fit in with the departmental scope of practice. There are a number of opportunities for specific roles within the department including paediatrics.

Candidates are encouraged to discuss any areas of interest with the clinical lead. Related research ideas are welcome.

At present the UECC at Rotherham NHS Foundation trust provides a 24-hour emergency service to a population in excess of 255,000.

The consultant rota is a self-rostered annualised rota providing consultant shop-floor presence from 8am to midnight seven days a week.

The successful candidate will work across all areas of the emergency department, managing both adult and paediatric patients and contributing to the on-call rota.
