Neway are looking for a Port Environmental Health Officer to join our client based with Liverpool City Council
Location: Georges Pierhead, Liverpool, L3 1DD. Contract: Temporary – 26 weeks. Hours: 35 per week. Start: 18 May 2026. Work pattern: Service‑demand based (no fixed pattern).
The Role
Liverpool City Council is seeking an experienced Port Environmental Health Officer to support statutory Port Health functions across the Port of Liverpool. Working within the Neighbourhoods & Housing directorate, you’ll carry out official controls, inspections, investigations and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with relevant legislation at the Border Control Post.
You’ll work under the Public Health Team Leader and play a key role in protecting public health, supporting sustainable service delivery, and representing the Port Health Service at internal and external meetings.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver a full range of Port Health duties, including inspections, re‑inspections, surveys and sampling.
* Undertake official controls and manage associated documentation for imported products.
* Investigate complaints, enquiries and potential breaches, taking enforcement action where required.
* Prepare and issue statutory notices, reports and evidentiary documentation.
* Provide technical advice and guidance to colleagues and stakeholders.
* Support training, development and performance across the service.
* Attend meetings, tribunals, courts and external events as a representative of the service.
* Work flexibly, including outside normal office hours when service demands require.
About You
Essential
* Degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Health.
* EHRB registration (or equivalent).
* Strong understanding of Port Health legislation and official controls.
* Ability to apply complex legislation, undertake investigations and communicate clearly in written, oral and visual formats.
* Able to work under pressure, manage changing deadlines and act on own initiative.
* Physically able to work in temperature‑controlled environments, outdoors, and on vessels (stairs/gangways).
* Willing to participate in standby rota and work outside normal hours when required.
* Basic DBS required.
Desirable
* Imported food control experience and knowledge of EU legislation.
* Experience across multiple Environmental Health sectors.
* Familiarity with MS Office and training delivery.
* Full driving licence and access to a business‑insured vehicle.
