Professional Duties of a Teacher

1. Exercise of general professional duties
2. A teacher, other than a principal, shall carry out professional duties as required:
* (a) under the reasonable direction of the principal in a school they are employed in;
* (b) if employed by a board without a fixed school assignment, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school they may work in.

2. Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing authority, including teaching, assessment, guidance, and administrative tasks as outlined.
Main Responsibilities
1. Planning
2. Developing courses and lessons; teaching students according to their educational needs; assessing and recording progress.
3. General
4. Promoting pupils' progress and well-being; providing advice on educational and social matters; communicating with parents and external bodies; participating in meetings.
5. Assessment/Reporting
6. Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, respecting confidentiality.
7. Staff Development
8. Participating in staff development schemes; reviewing and improving teaching methods; collaborating on curriculum development.
9. Discipline and Safety
10. Maintaining discipline; safeguarding health and safety; participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.
11. Examinations
12. Preparing pupils for public exams; assessing and reporting; supervising during exams.
13. Management Activities
14. Contributing to staff recruitment and development; managing or coordinating other teachers; participating in curriculum and organizational reviews.
15. Working Hours
16. Availability for 195 days per year; working hours and duties specified; breaks and supervision duties outlined.
17. Cover
18. Providing cover for absent teachers as specified, with conditions based on school size and policies.

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
* Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification, degree in Science (minimum 2:2), or equivalent.
* Experience: Teaching Key Stage 3 and GCSE Science; willing to teach GCE Biology/Life and Health Science.
* Registration: Must be registered with GTCNI before appointment.

* Knowledge: Up-to-date specifications, curriculum, assessment methods.
* Skills: Inspiring teaching, collaborative working, establishing routines.
* Qualities: Commitment to standards, enthusiasm, organization, holistic development focus.

Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Ability to teach GCSE Agriculture/Horticulture; experience of teaching KS3 and GCSE Science for at least 12 months.
