The Business Development Manager (BDM) for Medical is a forward-thinking and passionate professional dedicated to advancing ENGEL’s presence in the medical injection molding market. The BDM plays a critical role in identifying new business opportunities, monitoring industry developments, and building partnerships that ensure sustainable growth for ENGEL.
This role emphasizes early engagement with new and emerging customers, mold makers, suppliers, and automation partners, positioning ENGEL as a trusted partner from the outset of projects. By actively engaging clusters, associations, and trade groups, the BDM ensures ENGEL remains highly visible and relevant across the MED/PAC landscape.
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Medical and Packaging, this position balances:
1. 25% short-term new customer acquisition – qualifying and transitioning leads to sales, ensuring ENGEL is engaged with new prospects quickly.
2. 50% long-term strategic growth – advanced solutions, collaboration with development teams, and aligning ENGEL’s capabilities with evolving market needs.
3. 25% competitive analysis – evaluating lost opportunities, understanding market gaps, and driving improvements.
While the role has broad responsibility across North America, its initial geographic priority will be the West Coast, given the heavy concentration of medical customers and future growth potential.
Responsibilities
Market Intelligence & Strategy
4. Conduct market analysis to identify trends, growth opportunities, and ENGEL’s competitive advantages.
5. Monitor regulatory approvals (e.g., FDA), patents, and trade publications to identify early-stage prospects.
6. Develop and implement regional strategies with the VP of MED/PAC to ensure ENGEL is positioned early with target accounts and projects.
Customer Acquisition & Solution Selling
7. Identify and qualify early-stage leads, then transition them to local sales teams for pursuit.
8. Support sales with market intelligence and positioning strategies while ensuring opportunity ownership remains with sales.
9. Collaborate with technical teams to align ENGEL solutions with market needs.
10. Prepare strategic sales materials focused on ENGEL’s value in medical injection molding.
11. Contribute to training sessions for sales on MED/PAC trends and opportunities.
Partnerships & Industrial Marketing
12. Build and maintain relationships with OEMs, mold makers, automation partners, and suppliers.
13. Engage clusters, associations, and trade groups to strengthen ENGEL’s visibility and influence.
14. Support the acquisition of new business partners and strategic collaborations.
15. Contribute to the launch of ENGEL technologies into new markets.
Collaboration & Representation
16. Work closely with regional sales managers, KAMs, and global business development/marketing to align strategies.
17. Partner with sales on customer visits to reinforce ENGEL’s market position.
18. Represent ENGEL as a technology leader at industry events including trade shows like MD&M, NPE, BIOMEDevice and industry events and conferences such as MPP, MMO, and Plastics in Medical Devices Conference, among others.
19. Assist marketing in identifying and defining exhibits based on market needs.
Job Requirements
20. Structured, proactive, and extroverted personality with strong presentation skills.
21. Technical understanding of plastics processing and/or injection molding.
22. Experience in plastics processing, materials, or machinery manufacturing.
23. Strong ability to communicate and collaborate across local and international teams.
24. Knowledge of regulatory environments (FDA, ISO 13485, sustainability) — direct experience preferred but not required.
25. Technical sales-oriented with strong organizational skills and ownership mindset.
26. Willingness to travel extensively, including occasional international trips. Estimate of 75% travel.
27. Proficiency in Salesforce CRM, Microsoft collaborative tools (Teams, Sharepoint), and marketing tools.
28. Attributes: commitment, flexibility, diligence, and passion for medical solutions.
29. International experience an advantage.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
30. New Customer Acquisition – Number of qualified leads identified and handed to sales; conversion rate to pipeline.
31. Advanced Solutions Engagement – Collaboration with ENGEL development teams and alignment of technologies with future market needs.
32. Lost Opportunity Analysis – All MED losses reviewed with clear recommendations for corrective actions.
33. Market Presence – Participation in clusters, associations, and industry events, with measurable engagement.
34. Pipeline Growth – Expansion of long-term MED/PAC pipeline directly attributable to BDM activities.
