Chief Cardiac Physiologist (ECHO) – Fixed Term
We are seeking a suitably qualified Cardiac Physiologist to join our team at Ashford and St Peters NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed‑term post maternity cover. The department provides a wide range of investigations and is looking to expand its team of multi‑skilled cardiac physiologists as our invasive services expand.
Job Summary
The post holder will have extensive experience in echocardiography and will support the echocardiography service across both hospital sites. The role involves teaching, supervising, and performing advanced echo studies, including TOE, bubble studies, and stress echocardiography. The post holder will also rotate through the 24/7 PPCI service and play a key role in a 7‑day echo service.
Main Duties
* Extensive experience in Echocardiography across both hospital sites.
* Must be BSE accredited; undertake supervision and teaching at a high level.
* Assist with TOE, bubble studies, and stress echo; eventually perform and lead these studies.
* Maintain a progressive learning environment and support development of all department members.
* Provide and participate in 7‑day echo service, working weekends on a rotational basis.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide the full technical echo service with BSE accreditation.
* Prioritise daily workloads and manage intra‑day echo requests.
* Maintain technical competency and perform non‑invasive cardiac procedures.
* Oversee day‑to‑day running of the echo service – equipment, stock, cleaning.
* Manage equipment faults and liaise with manufacturers and engineers.
* Provide first‑line interpretation and technical reports; assist juniors.
* Respond to emergencies promptly and professionally.
* Assist with research studies.
* Keep up to date with clinical physiology trends and share knowledge.
* Ensure patient care is appropriate and individualised.
* Provide service provision or training in other areas of clinical physiology if required.
* Maintain statistical records and audits; manage the echo rota.
* Recruit, retain, and develop junior staff.
* Develop protocols, guidelines, and policies to achieve accreditations (BSE, IQIPS).
* Maintain adherence to national standards and local policies.

Person Specification – Essential
* BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
* Intermediate Life Support skills.
* BSE accreditation or equivalent.
* Extensive echo experience, especially stress echo and bubble studies.
* Minimum 6 years of physiological measurements experience.
* Sound knowledge of all echocardiography techniques.
* Experience in 7‑day echo service.
* Staff teaching/mentoring capability.
* Ability to wear lead apron, work extended hours, cross‑site if required, adaptable and flexible.
Person Specification – Desirable
* Training qualification.
* Higher professional qualification or masters level.
* RCCP/AHCS registration.
* Staff management experience.
* Experience of stock control.
