Job objectives and responsibilities
* Support the provision of a timely and reliable portering service to wards and departments throughout the hospital.
* Perform all forms of non-patient logistic tasks, patient movement, medical gas, waste, specimens & bloods, linen, fire response, major incident response, cardiac and medical emergency response via the use of a radio communications system.
Main duties
* Undertake careful and considerate movement of patients by either wheelchair, trolley, or bed.
* Transfer deceased patients to the Mortuary and transfer those deceased from the refrigerated store to the viewing room in accordance with current policy and procedures.
* Use any/all relevant machinery in the disposal of all waste in accordance with prescribed methods, procedures, and current legislation.
* Remove and transfer soiled linen from wards, departments in cages to the laundry delivery and collection point; also return clean linen in cages to wards and areas.
* Check, change, and deliver mobile gas cylinders in accordance with the prescribed methods and procedures.
* Transfer furniture and equipment between the various wards and departments of the hospital; this may include some clinical equipment if directed by management under the direction of the appropriate authorized Trust staff.
* Operate portering equipment in accordance with training.
* Attend tasks allocated on your smart Navenio device in accordance with the SLA to remain compliant.
* Collect and deliver items such as pathology specimens including bloods, pharmaceutical items, patient case notes and x-rays.
* Assist as directed in emergency contingency procedures (Fire, Major Incident, Bomb Threat, loss or interruption to communications, loss or interruption of utility services). This will include carrying a bleep for all unforeseen circumstances.
* Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Infection, Prevention & Control and COSHH regulations whilst undertaking duties commensurate with the post.
* Clean patient wheelchairs and patient trolleys as prescribed by your line manager; perform ad‑hoc cleaning if used to transport a patient with an infection.
* Collect, deliver and sort incoming and outgoing G.P.O/Courier/Internal Mail.
* Participate in any training or meetings required to undertake the duties of this post.
* Observe domestic machinery in accordance with training provided.
* Observe strict compliance with Waste Management Regulations.
* Maintain accurate records as required by best practice, company procedures and current legislation.
* Maintain the highest standard of personal hygiene in line with Mitie’s policies.
* Demonstrate a clear and effective alignment with the operational objectives and commercial interest of Mitie Communities.
* Be aware of the business continuity plan for the part of the business you work in.
Person Specification
* Previous experience in a similar role would be desirable.
* Experience working in a hospital environment.
* Good literate and numerate skills.
* Ability to follow instructions methodically.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Good verbal communication skills.
* Calm manner, capable of working under pressure.
* Flexible approach to work as the role may involve unsociable hours.
Health and Safety responsibilities
* Follow Group and company policies and procedures at all times.
* Report any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that may result in failure of service delivery or risk to health and safety or the environment.
* Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received.
* Report any issues or training needs to your line manager and/or via your divisional incident reporting system.

* Report actual and suspected security incidents.
