Job Overview
* Deliver an advanced comprehensive medicines management service to CNWL patients and the multidisciplinary treatment team responsible for their care.
* Provide input into policy and procedures affecting the use of pharmaceuticals at both local and trust-wide levels.
* Liaise with acute Trust pharmacy staff to support an effective dispensing and supply service.
* Deputise for the Lead Pharmacist in their absence and take management responsibilities as appropriate.
* Lead clinical supervision and CPD for Band 6/7 pharmacists within the team.
Main Duties of the Job
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated pharmacist with good leadership skills to join the clinical mental health pharmacy team in Brent for a 9‑month period to cover maternity leave.
The CNWL pharmacy department is undergoing significant developments including the implementation of an EPMA system and innovative clinical roles to improve medicines optimisation across the Trust.
The post holder will play a leading role in delivering and supporting the provision of clinical pharmacy services to the newly transformed community mental health services, working with multidisciplinary teams to provide high‑quality, professional, and specialist input.
Key responsibilities include:
* Provide input into policy and procedures affecting the use of pharmaceuticals at local and trust-wide levels and communicate CNWL Trust policies on medicines to directorate and local care quality group meetings.
* Develop specialist pharmacists through supervision of their practice and deputise for the lead pharmacist in their absence.
* Encourage and support the development of specialist pharmacists.
Clinical Practice
Ensure safe and appropriate use of medicines to maximise benefit and minimise risk to patients, including:
* Regular review of prescriptions, identification of significant drug interactions, advice for clinical monitoring, and compliance with legal aspects (Medicines Act, Mental Health Act) and the Trust formulary.
* Provide clinical pharmacy input at ward level and to the multidisciplinary team caring for outpatients (Community Mental Health Teams).
* Ensure junior pharmacy staff have adequate competencies.
* Review prescriptions for accuracy and legality, identify problems.
* Ensure effective supply of medicines for inpatient use and appropriate labeling for discharge.
* Monitor patients for adverse effects of medicines.
* Ensure patients understand the purpose of their medicines and address practical issues preventing optimal use.
* Plan patient discharge regarding medication, including transcription of dispensing requests.
* Demonstrate professional accountability and support multidisciplinary care.
* Identify and report medicines‑related errors and contribute to safe medication practice agenda.
* Appraise literature and provide accurate interpretation to improve medicines use.
* Act as a clinical role model, demonstrating safe and cost‑efficient use of medicines for junior pharmacists.
* Demonstrate innovation and extend profession boundaries.
* Continuously update skills and knowledge as part of ongoing professional development.
* Familiarise with breakaway techniques.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications (Essential)
* Vocational Master’s Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent years of experience + pre‑registration training.
* Advanced theoretical knowledge via Diploma (Higher Degree) level training.
* Certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent training/experience (e.g., Post Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Therapeutics).
* Registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Desirable
* Accredited membership of RPS Faculty / credentialed membership of College of Mental Health Pharmacy.
* Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
* Non‑medical prescriber or working towards.
Previous Experience (Essential)
* Ability to recommend, substantiate and communicate medication‑related therapeutic options to patients with mental health issues, carers and clinical staff.
* Experience in mentorship and training of staff.
* Monitoring and advising on drug expenditure.
* Supervision and line management of staff.
* Handling complex medicines information queries, undertaking clinical reviews and providing tailored medication advice/treatment plans.
* Experience with clinical auditor QI projects.
* Training and education of staff.
* Post‑registration training relevant to hospital pharmacy.
Desirable
* Staff management experience (recruitment/appraisal/training/leadership).
* Experience in providing clinical mental health services.
