WAYout offers free arts training and facilities to street youth in Sierra Leone. We are looking for Trustees with experience of fundraising and bid writing. We also want someone to focus on social media.
What difference will you make?
You will support and grow our work and direction, as well as help develop our work in other West African countries This is a vital role, helping ensure we can continue our support for the growing number of street youth. Unemployment is increasing and basic prices or rice and fuel continue to rise. Also the drug kush has been declared a National emergency and WAYout is one of the few organisations working with addicts. As a trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your skills and help the charity develop and have a stable income. Not only do we need someone to support fundraising and keep us viable, but you will also help us formulate our vision for the future. If you are interested in helping with our online presence and social media you will be working with extraordinarily talented, creative people. WAYout members are brilliant musicians, filmmakers and writers. We are missing many opportunities to promote ourselves and their work because we are not using our online presence well. You can probably see many ways and things we should be doing
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who recognises the importance of the arts in healing, developing confidence and voice and re-engaging with community and education. If you have a passion for music, filmmaking or writing- all the better. We need someone who knows about fundraising whether it’s grant applications, corporate sponsorship or fundraising events. You will have done it before and be able to support us in that. Practically you will be expected to attend three meetings a year but we hope you will want to be more engaged than that and possibly even visit Sierra Leone. WAYout works with very vulnerable young adults from 18-35 years old. These include gang members, drug addicts (the drug kush has been declared a National Emergency) and street youth. We also work with women in the provinces. They often have little formal education but are extremely bright, creative and have found a voice through filmmaking. All this means that fundraising can focus on youth, education, women’s rights, digital inclusion, skills training or the power of art in healing. If you have experience of at least one of these things and experience of fundraising then you can be an asset to the board. Personal attributes include sound judgment, empathy, integrity, impartiality, fairness, and confidentiality. Trustees must understand that they are bound by certain duties, and that the trust beneficiaries or a court may hold them personally liable for any breach of those duties. it is a substantial responsibility that requires significant commitment. The major duties of a trustee are as follows Loyalty a trustee must administer the trust solely in the interests of the trust beneficiaries, and must avoid conflicts of interest or use of trust assets for the trustee’s gain. Impartiality a trustee must treat the beneficiaries impartially, unless the trust instrument directs otherwise. This includes balancing the interests of current and remainder beneficiaries, as well as treating current beneficiaries impartially and fairly. Communication a trustee is part of the board which must generally keep the beneficiaries informed regarding the trust and its administration, including the assets and performance, and other information regarding the trustee’s activities. A trustee should also be aware of the beneficiaries’ life circumstances and needs.
What will you be doing?
What will you be doing? WAYOut has a fantastic track record of helping street youth into employment in music, TV Production, and associated areas in Sierra Leone– we make a real difference on the ground, winning awards, organising festivals, and working with world class musicians. We are really keen to hear from people who have an interest in the Arts and West Africa, and also practical experience of writing funding applications and developing links with sponsors. We have centres in Freetown and 2 other cities as well as with women in the provinces and the prison. We work down in the ghettos with gangs and drug addicts using music to give confidence and encourage self worth. We teach filmmaking and some of Sierra Leone’s most prominent filmmakers were trained at WAYout and our poets have won many awards. Ideally you would bring a fresh eye and lead our fundraising strategy. We would also want to invite you to visit our site in Freetown – or maybe you already have links to Sierra Leone – that would be fantastic. You’ll see the difference WAYout has already made in the lives of Street Youth – and also the potential for more. We are also looking for someone to take control of social media. It is greatly under used at present and is also something members want to learn about. We’re talking youth, music, film, passion, curiosity, hope. You’ll be joining a small charity that has already achieved a great deal, but needs some fresh perspective and enthusiasm. WAYout prides itself on being tightly integrated into the community it serves – even from the UK. We are a dedicated board of Trustees with wide experience, but looking to recruit someone of vision to help take us to the next stage of our evolution and secure our future. Your involvement will have a direct and immediate impact on our members – some of most marginalised young people in Sierra Leone and in doing so, you will learn as much from them.
