Biomedical Assistant

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual to work in Specimen Reception at our University Hospital Coventry site and our George Eliot site in Nuneaton.

Primary duties include receipt, sorting, and processing of samples, aiding laboratory staff with technical work, and entering patient data onto the pathology computer system. The role requires working accurately under pressure and being patient focused.

Job responsibilities

* Input accurate and timely patient and specimen data into Trust computerised systems.
* Safely dispose of contaminated materials, including sharps and confidential waste.
* Act as the first point of contact for all telephone and face‑to‑face enquiries, dealing in a professional manner.
* Sort and identify specimens received, taking appropriate action in the event of discrepancies.
* Prepare samples for testing by laboratory staff and provide basic laboratory support as required by the supervisor.
* Dispatch and post samples to authorised persons and outside laboratories, ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations.
* Undertake agreed clinical and non‑clinical tasks following training, referring to appropriately trained staff as necessary.

Requirements

Good literacy, numeracy and communication skills are required, as are intermediate IT skills. Ability to work as part of a team and manage one's own workload is essential.

Previous experience of data entry or working in a diagnostic pathology environment would be advantageous, but full training will be given to successful candidates.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from their UK occupational health provider or UK GP.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check to identify any previous criminal convictions.
