Job Overview

The average daily emergency “take” in Adult Medicine is 35 patients (+25 for Care of the Elderly) with an average length of stay of less than 4‑5 days. Consultant post‑take ward rounds are carried out continuously in the EQ (Emergency Quadrant). There are over 6,000 emergency admissions each year to Adult Medicine and a further 4,000 admissions to Care of the Elderly. The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine offers twice‑weekly postgraduate sessions, weekly physician grand rounds and a lunchtime clinical conference. The role welcomes both Welsh and English speakers; Welsh is desirable.


Main Duties

The candidate will be responsible, both professionally and managerially, to Dr H Nair, Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine, and will receive supervision from the team of consultants.

* Provide support to Consultant and Associate Specialist in managing the department’s in‑patients and out‑patients (ambulatory patients).
* Provide leadership and education to the junior doctors on the team.
* Provide on‑call cover as a Middle Grade.
* Contribute to local postgraduate activity.
* Participate in clinical audit and CPD, fully supported by the Health Board.
* Participate in research projects as necessary.

Shared office accommodation and access to intranet/internet will be provided.

Person Specification


Health – Essential Criteria

* Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice.


Career Progression – Essential Criteria

* Provide complete details of employment history and evidence of consistent career progression.
* At least 24 months experience in medicine or an ACCS programme or equivalent (excluding Foundation modules).


Application Completion – Essential Criteria

* All sections of the application form completed fully according to written guidelines.


Qualifications – Essential Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCP (UK) Part 1 or equivalent at time of application, or working towards Part 1 within six months of appointment.


Qualifications – Desirable Criteria

* MRCP (UK) full diploma or equivalent.
* Intercalated BSc or equivalent.
* Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (research thesis not part of first medical degree).


Eligibility – Essential Criteria

* Eligible for full registration with the GMC and hold a current licence to practice.
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO‑affiliated Foundation Programme.
* Evidence of CT/ST1 and CT/ST2 competencies in medicine at time of application.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in the specialty (except under exceptional circumstances).


Fitness to Practice – Essential Criteria

* Up to date and fit to practice safely.


Language Skills – Essential Criteria

* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for medical communication; evidence may include English‑based undergraduate training, or IELTS/TOEFL scores meeting a 7.0 overall band and 7.0 in each component within 24 months of application.


Clinical Skills – Essential Criteria

* Appropriate knowledge base and sound clinical judgement.
* Basic cardiovascular disease management awareness.
* Proficiency in a range of medical procedures as defined by the CMT curriculum.
* Competence in managing medical emergencies and in‑patients via continuous work‑based assessments and portfolio evidence.
* Competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
* Current ALS certification or equivalent.


Clinical Skills – Desirable Criteria

* Awareness of general medical emergencies.
* Competences in the specialty as defined by relevant curricula.
* Skills in acute medical emergency certifications such as ALERT or IMPACT.
* Procedural skills relevant to medical patients (e.g., central venous cannulation, chest drain insertion, joint aspiration, DC cardioversion, abdominal paracentesis).


Research and Audit Skills – Essential Criteria

* Understanding of research, including ethical issues.
* Understanding of audit principles, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Knowledge of evidence‑informed practice.


Research and Audit Skills – Desirable Criteria

* Understanding of research methodology.
* Academic and research achievements and involvement in formal research projects.
* Academic publications.
* Involvement in audit or quality projects focusing on patient safety and clinical improvement.
* Evidence of portfolio of audit projects with closed audit loops and learning of change management principles.
* Understanding of clinical governance.
* Exceptional achievement in medicine.
* Involvement in teaching students, postgraduates and professionals with feedback.
* Participation in teaching courses.
