Overview
Job Summary: An opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner within the Ophthalmology Urgent Care. Applications are invited from registered nurses confident in the autonomous management of patients with minor injuries or illnesses. There is potential to receive training and support to become an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner at our new build location: New REI building (plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk).
The ideal candidate will have an interest in Ophthalmology and be driven to become a qualified nurse practitioner who is passionate about patient care and willing to develop skills as a Nurse Practitioner. Competence in autonomous assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment of minor injury is desirable.
The successful candidate will be supported with a clinical supervisor and will have opportunities to attend teaching sessions, develop clinical skills and undertake further academic study.
Responsibilities
* Work autonomously as a Nurse Practitioner within agreed Trust guidelines and local policies and protocols for nursing care.
* Assist in development and implementation of Directorate policy, nursing strategy and Nurse Practitioner competencies.
* Act as an expert resource and facilitator to educate and train other healthcare professionals; act as the Senior nurse for urgent care in the absence of the Senior Sister Urgent Care Lead.
* Provide high standard of nursing care assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient needs from admission to discharge.
* Report and document nursing/patient needs and communicate changes with the multidisciplinary team.
* Promote health education within the clinical area and advise patients and families on health promotion issues.
* Undertake patient triage and clear assessments of patient health in acute ophthalmic settings via telephone and face to face; make safe and appropriate decisions.
* Demonstrate evidence-based practice and contribute to improving patient-centred care.
* Supervise, assess, mentor and support junior registered nurses and other healthcare professionals, including bank/agency staff.
* Share knowledge to develop department-level skills and ensure infection prevention and control practices are followed.
* Perform manual handling assessments and ensure actions are met; provide day-to-day supervision of patients and staff.
Requirements
* Qualifications
Essential:
• NMC registered Nurse
• Diploma qualification or equivalent training
* Desirable:
• Relevant Degree or equivalent
• Relevant mentorship course
* Aptitude & Abilities
Essential: Works effectively as part of a team; Excellent communication and listening skills.
* Desirable: Cannulation and Venepuncture
* Knowledge & Experience
Essential: Understanding of general medical/surgical conditions within Ophthalmology; experience with patients with special needs; evidence of CPD/training.
* Desirable: Experience in an urgent care department and Ophthalmic settings.
