Overview
University of Sheffield. Closing Date: 10 October 2025. Working Pattern: Full-time 35 Hours per week. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) invites applications for a Project Engineer in the Subtractive Process team. The role involves joining a fast-learning individual with strong transferable research skills to support the assessment, optimisation, and application of subtractive process solutions and associated technology. The focus is on boosting efficiency in milling, turning, drilling, CAM strategy, virtual machining and machine tool capability, and on showcasing groundbreaking technologies through manufacturing demonstration components.
Collaboration is key: you will work closely with partners, help scope new projects, and deliver complex initiatives with mentorship from experienced staff. The role may require occasional travel within the UK and internationally, and may involve work within the defence sector.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate with partners to scope new projects and deliver complex initiatives with mentorship from experienced staff.
* Assess, optimise, and apply subtractive process solutions and related technology to improve machining efficiency (milling, turning, drilling, CAM strategy, virtual machining, machine tool capability).
* Contribute to manufacturing demonstration components and technical delivery of research and machining projects, including preparing materials and equipment, conducting experiments, and monitoring and analysing results.
* Prepare reports that summarise key findings and present results to internal and external stakeholders.
* Plan and manage short-to-medium-term tasks while contributing to broader group planning.
* Develop skills through training to meet evolving project requirements.
* Travel occasionally for on-site investigations or meetings, within the UK and occasionally internationally.
Qualifications and candidate profile
* STEM graduate or equivalent background; strong transferable research skills and ability to learn quickly.
* Interest in subtractive manufacturing processes and manufacturing research environments.
* Ability to manage time effectively and adhere to quality and project management procedures.
* Willingness to take on challenges and collaborate across teams; openness to defence sector work where applicable.
