An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Nurse Consultant for Adult Palliative Care/Associate Nurse Consultant in Adult Palliative Care.

This role will be part of Community and Neighbourhood Health Clinical Service Unit (CSU) team working in close collaboration with the Deputy Head of Nursing, Lead Nurse for SPC and EOLC, Clinical Director and Service Manager.

Are you a passionate advanced practitioner with a specialist interest in Adult Palliative Care?

You will provide strong and effective clinical leadership to the specialist palliative care nursing team across the community and acute services. You will act as an expert practitioner providing advice and consultancy for the management of patients with complex specialist palliative care needs.

You will work with patients & staff, evaluating existing services and providing innovative and novel models of care. You will act as an exemplary role model for expert clinical nursing practice, demonstrating high professional standards, values and attitudes with a patient centred approach.

Main duties of the job

This role will be at an advanced clinical level in direct delivery of high quality palliative care making critical clinical decisions based on expert knowledge and clinical assessment skills. Working across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice as set out by Health Education England (2017).

The post holder will provide clinical leadership and support within the nursing/AHP SPC teams in developing the service to improve the patient experience, supporting Palliative Medicine Consultants with day-to-day clinical activity.

The postholder will provide expert clinical care to patients with specialist palliative care needs via direct assessment and also by providing expert knowledge and assistance to clinical teams across the trust. To provide the highest standard of expert holistic care for patients through utilisation of advanced clinical skills and advice in the assessment and management of patients, working autonomously and with the multi-disciplinary team to improve the quality and safety of patient care.

This role may be considered as a development role as a Associate Nurse Consultant Band 8a depending on skills, qualifications and experience with the aim of progression to Nurse Consultant Band 8b.

Knowledge & Skills (Band 8a & Band 8b)

Essential criteria

1. High level of interpersonal and communication skills
2. Expert clinical skills and history taking
3. Evidence of expertise and competency in relation to nursing practice appropriate to post.

5. Proven Leadership skills
6. Time management skills
7. Excellent organisational skills
8. Ability to prioritise workloads
9. Expert knowledge, clinical skills and experience in specialist palliative care field

Qualifications & Training (Band 8a)

Essential criteria

10. Registered Adult Nurse with current NMC registration
11. 1st Degree in nursing practice
12. Masters degree relevant to professional nursing practice or working towards
13. Post graduate certificate (level 7) in a relevant field
14. Physical Assessment and Disease Management Skills Course
15. Independent Nurse Prescribing

Experience (Band 8a and Band 8b)

Essential criteria

16. Significant experience working within the specialist palliative care environment
17. Experience of working autonomously
18. Experience of assessment, diagnosis and care planning within a complex care setting
19. Experience of delivering formal teaching programmes
20. Experience of innovation in practice
21. Experience of leading audits and implementing these changes in practice
