Chief Executive at The Together Initiative
enior Policy Advisor – Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion
Contract: Fixed-term, 12 months
Location: Remote/flexible, with regular travel to London
Working pattern: 5 days/week (flexible)
Reporting to: Head of Cohesion
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Senior Policy Advisor to support the work of the Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion – a major new initiative focused on how we live well together in an increasingly divided and fast-changing society.
This role sits within the small cohesion team at /together, which serves as the secretariat for the Commission. /together is one of the UK’s most powerful and diverse coalitions, working to build kinder, closer and more connected communities. Alongside mass participation campaigns like The Big Help Out and the VE Day 80th anniversary community celebrations, /together runs a growing programme of work focused on strengthening social cohesion and connection. The Commission is the flagship initiative within this strand – established to provide long-term intellectual leadership, while delivering a mass engagement campaign to understand how we live well together in an increasingly divided society.
You will lead on a core element of the Commission’s work– supporting a structured programme of commissioner engagement to test ideas, review insight, shape practical policy recommendations and ultimately help draft the commission’s reports.
This will include preparing briefings, researching key themes, coordinating expert input, holding the pen on the final report and ensuring sessions are well-prepared, productive and smoothly delivered. You’ll work autonomously but collaboratively within a small, high-performing team.
This is a fast-paced and hands-on role for someone with strong analytical and writing skills, the ability to synthesise complex information quickly, and confidence working independently.
ABOUT THE COMMISSION
The Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion brings together senior figures from politics, media, academia and civil society to explore what helps communities thrive – and what’s needed to build a more cohesive, connected country.
Phase One of the Commission – focused on evidence building through polling, focus groups, roundtables and a public call for evidence – is currently underway.
Phase Two, launching in autumn 2025, will focus on two key strands:
* A national public engagement exercise to shape a shared vision for the kind of society we want to live in
* A programme of commissioner engagement to test ideas, develop recommendations, and explore the practical and political routes to change
This role will focus on supporting the commissioner engagement strand .
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Develop politically neutral briefing packs and short thematic papers for commissioner meetings
* Develop and refine drafts of the report - managing multiple edits and contributions
* Research emerging themes using insights from Phase One, external experts, and policy literature
* Coordinate calls and written inputs from expert contributors – including identifying relevant individuals and synthesising input
* Support the planning and delivery of structured, productive commissioner sessions
* Attend and contribute to commissioner meetings – supporting live note-taking, capturing actions, and helping ensure sessions run smoothly and to time
* Liaise with senior stakeholders in a confident, professional and timely way
* Work closely with the Head of Cohesion and the wider secretariat team to shape and refine policy outputs
* Ensure all outputs are well-structured, accessible, and reflect the Commission’s aims and tone
ABOUT YOU
* Experience in policy, research or journalism
* Exceptional written communication skills – able to produce clear, compelling and concise briefing materials for senior audiences, often distilling complex or competing inputs into accessible summaries
* Strong analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to draw out what matters and communicate it with confidence
* Comfortable coordinating input from a range of experts and stakeholders – including gathering, reviewing and translating external insights into polished, strategic materials
* Knowledge of cohesion, democracy, or civic engagement issues
* Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines
* Confidence working with senior stakeholders and subject matter experts
* Highly organised, detail-oriented and able to juggle multiple tasks
* Experience supporting commissions, panels or similar strategic programmes
* Familiarity with community engagement or public-facing policy development
