Position Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Engineering Team as a Controls Engineer. In this role, you will support the business by providing expert technical support to engineering and operations, with a focus on machine drive and control system technologies. Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing continuous improvement programs to enhance manufacturing safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency. You will troubleshoot and resolve control system issues, coach and develop the engineering team, and work within a continuous improvement environment. This position is based at our site in Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire, UK, reporting to the site Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities
1. Diagnose complex machine faults and control system errors promptly to minimize downtime, applying permanent corrective measures.
2. Develop and implement projects to improve manufacturing availability, product quality, safety, and process efficiency.
3. Maintain knowledge of manufacturing processes and operating sequences.
4. Coach and develop the maintenance engineering team in machine control and automation systems.
5. Update electrical system documentation following changes.
6. Investigate plant failures (FMEA) and prepare reports.
7. Provide second-level support to shift teams during reactive maintenance.
8. Conduct obsolescence reviews and develop risk mitigation plans.
Unique Aspects of the Role
Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with various equipment. Proficiency in PLC fault finding, diagnostics, and programming with Siemens S5/71, Telemecanique PL7, Allen Bradley, Omron. Knowledge of machine safety control systems per BS EN ISO 13849-1. Ability to design and modify electrical control circuits complying with legislative standards. Familiarity with inverter and servo drive systems, including parameterization and tuning. Proven project delivery within time and budget constraints. Qualifications include HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, BS7671 17th Edition, and apprentice-trained C&G 2391 or similar, which is advantageous.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified engineer with a recognized apprenticeship or equivalent, committed to continuous professional development. Experience in a fast-moving manufacturing setting is beneficial. Key skills include leadership, organizational, decision-making, fault finding, problem solving, system design, and effective communication. A desire to learn and share knowledge is essential.
