Overview
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist/Intensivist to support anaesthesia and critical care services across oncological specialties. The post includes sessions in anaesthesia for oncological surgery, radiotherapy, and potentially proton therapy for paediatric patients. The successful candidate will provide daytime sessions and on-call cover for the 8-bedded Level 2/3 Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU), which supports oncology, haematology, and major surgical patients. Additional sessions in proton therapy may support paediatric anaesthetic services.
Position details
The role comprises a 10 PA job plan, with 7.5 Programmed Activities (PA) for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA), agreed on appointment with the Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Critical Care and the Directorate Operations Manager. Individual needs and specialist interests are supported while ensuring service requirements are met.
Department
The Department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care is dynamic and expanding, offering professional development opportunities. Applicants with a specialist interest in Critical Care are encouraged, with job plans developed accordingly. The department operates a rolling rota reviewed annually in line with Trust policy and sits within the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres & Surgery (ATS), part of the Division of Clinical Support & Specialist Surgery (CSSS), alongside Radiology, Laboratory and Support Services.
Main duties
This post is complemented by 25 other consultants, eight of which contribute to critical care cover. There are nine resident specialty doctors covering OCCU, supported by two specialist trainees in acute medicine or internal Medicine, one clinical fellow and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).
* The post holder will share with the other consultants the responsibility for the continuity of care of patients treated at The Christie.
* The successful candidate will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share administrative duties with consultant colleagues.
* Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the successful candidate is expected to follow division's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with health care professionals on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
