The post holder will provide a specialist service to advise and promote evidence-based practice in the care of all patients with complex nutritional needs and/or requiring nutrition support.
GI Medicine operates as a managed single service MSS across North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH), Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General Hospital (TGH). All roles will be expected to work across sites as part of a collaborative, cross-site working ethos that promotes shared learning, consistency of care and flexibility within job planning.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work independently and within a nutrition support team to provide/facilitate effective and evidence-based clinical nutrition advice and support.
The post holder is expected to motivate staff to provide high standards of evidence-based clinical nutritional care by acting as a professional role model, provide expert professional clinical advice with regards to nutritional care and nutrition support to colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team as well as patients and their carers/family members.
The post holder will be responsible for providing and supporting specialist education and training programmes for health care professionals and other professional groups, in conjunction with nutrition nurse colleagues who are based at other sites across the trust.
Job responsibilities
* Assist medical and nursing staff with the development and implementation of management/treatment plans for patients with problems related to artificial nutritional support.
* Assess, evaluate and recommend suitable enteral devices for the individual patient.
* Insert and change gastrostomy tubes for patients within the hospital setting, including training for the role of First Assistant for Percutaneous Gastrostomy placement in the endoscopy department (PEGs).
* Insert and change nasogastric tubes within the hospital setting and provide expert support to clinical areas with complex patients or difficult intubations of nasogastric tubes.
* Advise on post-procedural care and maintenance of enteral feeding tubes within the acute setting and provide advice to the community, if and when requested.
Person Specification
• NMC Registered Nurse – Five years post registration experience.
