Summary
The Summer of Nature Recovery is an immersive 2-8-week experience set in the picturesque River Dart Valley of South Devon, offering participants a hands-on experience in ecological restoration and community-led conservation. Hosted at Lower Sharpham Farm in Ashprington, the program combines practical farm work with expert-led workshops, field trips, and community activities, all aimed at fostering a deeper connection to nature and building skills for future careers in environmental stewardship.
Throughout the summer, trainees engage in a diverse curriculum covering topics such as biodiversity management, rewilding, indigenous culture, wild diets, and nature connection. The program includes field trips to local ecological sites, including Dartmoor National Park, and offers opportunities for hands-on tasks like livestock care, organic gardening, and habitat restoration. Participants also benefit from personalized support and guidance, helping them to develop confidence and clarity in their journey toward nature recovery.
The summer of nature recovery will explore four different themes, each delving into different aspects of nature recovery. Across the weeks you will gain a comprehensive overview of the nature recovery movement, gain skills relevant to working in the nature sector, and improve your confidence.

The 8 weeks or your selection of certain weeks will include a series of inspirational talks, courses, presentations, and workshops around ecology and nature recovery. Some will explore key wildlife groups such as birds, butterflies, and botany, others will explore deep ecology and cover themes such as indigenous culture, nature connection, wild medicines, nature/culture collaborations, wild diets, and food provenance.
The program of work and learning will be formatted into a weekly schedule around the running of the farm. This will include farm and community living tasks, field trips, livestock handling, practical work, and dynamic learning experiences. We share our farm and work in partnership with United Response, a charity dedicated to supporting adults with learning difficulties.
Field trips will take you to some of the ecological jewels that we have Devon. Some experiences will explore the local landscape of the River Dart and Dartmoor national park. Others might be to other rewilding/reintroduction sites across Devon through our links with the Devon Rewilding Network.
Extracurriculars
There is a buzz in the summer months and your evenings will often be full, either with programmed activities or plans made with your colleagues, enjoying the facilities of the farm centre and local area. This could include occasional events on a theme or topic, invitational guest speakers, nature immersions such as star gazing, evening bat/bird/moth walks, food evenings/woodland pizza nights, a trip to the local country pub, or a dusk canoe trip.
Accommodation
Eco-accommodation is all provided within the farm. We have an 11-bedroom bunkhouse where trainees find privacy in their rooms, and enjoy communal living in the adjoining dayroom with its cosy woodburner, large open plan kitchen and dining room, laundry and bathroom. Nestled among the trees, this provides a homely and relaxing place to return after a day of learning and outdoor work.
