Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated individual to join the Nuclear Medicine Physics team within the Durham, Darlington and Hartlepool unit of Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering.
The unit performs approximately 7,000 nuclear medicine imaging, non-imaging and therapy investigations across the three departments. SPECT-CT is undertaken in an expanding number of examinations at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, and Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham have recently installed new gamma cameras at both sites. Bone densitometry is also performed at University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The unit provides specialist advice and support to other centres, including the Breast Unit at University Hospital of North Tees where radioactive Iodine-125 seeds are used for breast tumour and nodal localisation prior to excision surgery. Work to build a new state-of-the-art central radiopharmacy at the University Hospital of North Durham is underway and the new unit is anticipated to open at the end of the year.

Main duties of the job
This post will provide the successful applicant an excellent opportunity to work with a friendly team and develop their nuclear medicine specialist knowledge supporting the work of 6 other Clinical Scientists within the unit.
The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of service provision, including equipment commissioning and testing, providing sound scientific advice to clinical technologists and trainees, and promoting research and development within the unit.
Working base will be the University Hospital of Hartlepool, however the successful applicant will be expected to travel between 4 hospital sites (University Hospital of Hartlepool, University Hospital of North Tees, University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital) to aid in service provision.
Applicants should have achieved state registration or be eligible to register with the HCPC as a clinical scientist within a suitable timeframe. Trainees nearing the end of their training are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge
* Knowledge of a range of nuclear medicine procedures
* Knowledge of legislation, standards and protocols relating to clinical nuclear medicine work.
* Understanding of the functioning and safe use of common nuclear medicine equipment.
* Clinical relevance of nuclear medicine investigations.
* Standards for radiopharmaceutical production.
* Knowledge of bone densitometry.
* Wider knowledge in radiation protection.
Skills
* IT skills including databases and spreadsheets.
* Ability to communicate effectively with other health professionals and patients.
* Good time management and organisational skills.
* Technical reporting of nuclear medicine studies.
* Patient handling skills including IV administration of radiopharmaceuticals
Experience
* Experience in nuclear medicine.
* Quality assurance and calibration procedures relating to a range of nuclear medicine equipment.
* Experience in Radiation Protection
* Manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals.
* Experience in training and supervision of trainees
* Audit, research and development.
* Formal presentations at national and local meetings.
Qualifications
* First or second class honours degree in physics or related physical science.
* Working towards HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist (appropriate specialism).
* Higher degree in Medical Physics or related subject.
* Corporate membership of IPEM
* HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist.
