Senior Quantity Surveyor
Are you a highly capable and ambitious Quantity Surveyor ready to step into a Senior leadership role? We're looking for a confident, degree-qualified professional to independently manage demanding projects, lead teams, and provide exceptional value to our clients.
The Opportunity
This is a senior position requiring minimal supervision where you'll take the lead on all core Quantity Surveying functions, mentor junior staff, and drive business success. You'll be instrumental in delivering projects successfully from inception through to final account.
Responsibilities and Core Skills
* You will confidently deliver and mentor junior staff on the following activities:
* Cost Management:
* Establish clear client cost requirements and drive cost planning exercises.
* Complete and/or guide Cost Planning and Value Engineering across RIBA design stages.
* Monitor and accurately record project costs, variations, and manage risk registers.
* Produce CVRs (Cost Value Reconciliations) and comprehensive project reports.
* Advise on optimal procurement strategies and contract suites (including best practice).
* Competently prepare procurement reports.
* Supervise the compilation of tender and contract documents, including checking Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
* Interrogate tender appraisals and identify key risk areas for the client.
* Contract Administration & Claims:
* Value completed works and arrange payments in accordance with the contract.
* Assess cost variations and identify project risks.
* Determine the validity of contract claims, advise on dispute resolution, and prepare necessary contract notices.
* Prepare and agree final accounts.
* Leadership & Communication:
* Lead project meetings and confidently respond in challenging situations.
* Demonstrate strong leadership and excellent communication with all project and client team members.
Leadership, Business & Personal Development
As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be expected to drive development and business growth:
* Team Development: Act as a mentor and support staff studying for their APC (Assessment of Professional Competence), including acting as an APC Supervisor when required.
* Business Growth: Proactively work with clients and consultants to identify and 'farm' leads for additional or future work.
* Profitability: Demonstrate initiative in commercial decisions, understand how to reduce time/cost on fixed-fee jobs, and ensure detailed, accurate time recording.
* CPD: Engage in continuous personal development (CPD) and share valuable learning materials to enhance team knowledge.
Qualifications & Attributes
* Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or equivalent (includes Masters).
* Demonstrable significant knowledge of construction techniques, principles, technology, and building economics.
* Reliable, trustworthy, numerate, and able to work with accuracy and attention to detail.
* Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-working ability.
* Excellent IT and communication skills.
* Commitment to a proactive approach, excellent work ethic, and continuous personal learning.
Highly Desirable
* Chartered Quantity Surveyor (MRICS) or close to sitting the APC assessment.
* Experience in using CostX.
* Experience working on both building and civil engineering projects.
* Prior experience working both client side and for contractors.
