Job Opportunity: Consultants in Geriatric Medicine at Colchester Hospital
The Trust is seeking to recruit two Consultants in Geriatric Medicine, based at Colchester Hospital, to join the existing Consultant team.
Role Overview:
The successful candidates will participate in developing Older People's Services and providing care to elderly patients. Subspecialty interests such as movement disorders, Parkinson's disease, acute frailty service, community interface, and orthogeriatrics are welcome. Key responsibilities include inpatient care, frailty work, outpatient clinics, acute medical on-call duties, as well as teaching and training junior medical staff.
Frailty Service:
Our frailty service operates through a 'community at the front door' approach, reaching into the emergency department. It is primarily outpatient-based, providing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for frail elderly patients. The team includes a nurse consultant, middle-grade doctor, GP trainee, nurse practitioners, senior nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, pharmacist, and healthcare assistant.
Job Details:
* Full-time position (10 Programmed Activities - PAs)
* Workload split: 8.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC), 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). Of the SPA, 1 PA is allocated for revalidation, and 0.5 PA for additional activities such as supervision.
* On-call commitment: an additional 1 PA, with a frequency of 1 in 8.5 weekends.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide a high-standard, Consultant-led service in collaboration with colleagues.
* Develop care pathways and clinical guidelines with the multi-professional team.
* Maintain effective working relationships with wards, outpatient services, and the Emergency Department.
* Foster close links with primary care and other departments.
* Offer educational, clinical support, and leadership to junior staff and the multidisciplinary team.
* Ensure access to information for performance measurement and benchmarking.
* Implement quality review processes to maintain high standards.
* Exemplify professional leadership aligned with the organisation's values and address any poor behaviour.
* Ensure junior doctors' training complies with College requirements.
* Participate in medical staff appraisals according to Trust policies.
