The Role
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer with strong experience in Cloud data platforms, API integration, and modern data engineering tools to help deliver our Tax & Legal data and analytics strategy. You’ll work closely with Lead Engineers, Architects, Product Owners, and BI Developers to design and implement scalable, high-performance data solutions.
This is a hands-on engineering role involving the design, development, and deployment of cloud-based data pipelines, integrations, and analytics-ready datasets. The role requires engaging with a variety of stakeholders in engineering teams and the business to deliver business critical solutions. You will collaborate with Data Architects and Data engineers’ firm wide to align to best practice and the firms Data management policy.
Whilst there is no expectation of existing knowledge of tax, we would expect you to develop a degree of domain knowledge over time.
You will have
1. Proven experience working as a data engineer or software engineer working on Cloud data platforms, especially Azure.
2. Strong hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory and Azure Databricks (or Microsoft Fabric).
3. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to logically analyse complex requirements, processes, and systems to deliver solutions.
4. Solid understanding of data modelling, ETL/ELT processes, and data warehousing.
5. Proficiency in SQL and Python (especially PySpark), as well as other relevant programming languages.
6. Passion for using data to drive key business decisions.
7. Excellent people skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
You may have
8. Experience with Microsoft Fabric.
9. Familiarity with other cloud platforms (AWS, GCP).
10. Experience integrating with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Netsuite.
11. Familiarity with DevOps environments and practices.
12. Knowledge of Delta Lakehouse architectures and concepts.
13. Experience with Azure Synapse (dedicated and serverless pools), Azure Data Lake, and Azure SQL.
14. Familiarity working in a DevOps environment.
15. Experience with REST APIs, including endpoint authentication and integration (e.g., Microsoft Graph APIs).
16. Experience with data governance and compliance frameworks.
17. Experience with Power BI or other visualisation tools.
18. Knowledge of Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) is a plus.
19. Experience deploying backend services and APIs using Azure App Services and/or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
Key responsibilities
20. Design and build cloud-native data pipelines using Azure Data Factory.
21. Perform data transformation leveraging Spark, Azure Mapping Dataflows, or Databricks.
22. Develop data pipelines and models in Azure Synapse (dedicated and serverless pools), Databricks Lakehouse, or Microsoft Fabric.
23. Create and maintain reusable, scalable data ingestion frameworks.
24. Develop and manage API integrations with external and internal systems, handling secure authentication and endpoint management.
25. As part of our ongoing data strategy modernisation, you may also have the opportunity to work with AI tools such as Azure OpenAI, Genie (Databricks), and Azure Document Intelligence.
26. Collaborate with Data Analysts and BI Developers to enable self-serve analytics using Power BI and Alteryx by developing data models and warehouses.
27. Contribute to data modelling, data quality, and metadata management practices.
28. Participate in Scaled Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives).
29. Work within a DevOps environment.
