If so, this part‑time developmental dental nurse role at Plymouth Community Dental Service (PCDS) offers fully funded and supported training to achieve the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing.
Main duties
* Assist clinicians with unscheduled dental care and routine child treatment, and support children under anaesthetic at University Hospitals Plymouth.
* Support and care for patients while managing the surgery, completing clinical and administrative tasks.
* Work with all dental equipment, including sharp instruments and special devices.
* Provide advice to patients and carers regarding procedures, post‑operative care, and pain control.
* Prepare and decontaminate the clinical environment, ensuring cross‑infection control protocols are followed.
* Check equipment, report faults, and ensure emergency supplies (oxygen cylinders, masks, defibrillator) are available.
* Record clinical observations and take x‑rays where required after training.
* Work at various locations, including general anaesthesia sessions at UHP, when necessary.
* Triage urgent care patients, determine urgency, and book appointments.
* Undertake duties delegated by Dental Operators and PCDS managers.
* Follow policies and guidelines from NHS England, the British Dental Association, the General Dental Council, COSHH, RIDDOR, HASAWA, DOM HTM 01 05.
Person Specification
Knowledge
* Knowledge of dental and surgical equipment and materials.
* Understanding of health and safety regulations and cross‑infection control measures.
* Ability to work independently for clinical and administrative tasks.
* Competence in recognising and managing medical emergencies.
* Awareness of continuous professional development and basic life support training.
Qualifications
* NEBDN Qualification, City & Guilds NVQ3, or equivalent.
* Registered Dental Nurse with the GDC, working at Band 4 KSF level.
* Commencement or willingness to commence NEBDN conscious sedation training.
* GCSE Grade A‑C (or equivalent) in English and maths.

* Fluency in spoken and written English.
* Good organisational, keyboard and ICT skills.
* Calm, reassuring manner and professional behaviour.
* Excellent interpersonal skills for communication with staff and patients.
* Stock and consumables management.
