Overview
Job Summary: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent band 6 junior sister/charge hand within the general surgery division on Beech B. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated registered nurse to join us, assisting the ward manager in the smooth running of the unit with team management responsibilities and motivation to take the unit forward and provide the team with supportive and confident leadership. Training and development requirements including enhanced care will be identified at appointment and appropriate training will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual with support from the ward manager and matron.
Responsibilities
* Support ward manager and the staff with professional accountability and standards, ensuring professional practices are in line with the NMC code, the Trust values and the Trust procedures and policies.
* Ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care.
* Support the team to ensure environmental standards of cleanliness are maintained in line with national and the Trust standards.
* In the absence of ward manager ensure smooth functioning of the department.
* Support the development of junior staff and students ensuring appropriate supervision and assessment.
* Develop, lead and manage a patient centred nursing service delivered by professional staff ensuring the highest possible standards of care.
* Deputise for the Departmental Manager in her, his absence.
* Contribute significantly towards the strategic and operational development of the Unit.
* Support the Departmental Manager in the recruitment and selection process of nursing staff as well as in sickness management.
* Implement the Trust values in daily practice.

Job Description
Job responsibilities: To work according to the NMC Code and relevant professional guidelines and frameworks including the 6 Cs as a named nurse and key worker for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for: the assessment of care and health education needs; the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient; to demonstrate experience and skills in clinical practice, facilitation and teaching, and management. To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and the multidisciplinary team. To act as a role model and to support new and less experienced staff as well as students and agency staff, including participation in preceptorship programmes. Develop, lead and manage a patient centred nursing service delivered by professional staff ensuring the highest possible standards of care. Deputise for the Departmental Manager in their absence. Professional Development And Education Responsibilities
To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff and student education programmes. To help maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator in supervision and teaching of less experienced staff. To attend Trust and local orientation programmes and mandatory training. To maintain a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice in line with PREP requirements. To contribute to annual appraisal and support the Departmental Manager in staff appraisals. To support nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies and provide training for junior staff, students and health care assistants. To maintain training records and develop yearly training plans with the Departmental Manager.
Professional And Clinical Leadership Responsibilities
* Deputises for the Departmental Manager and liaises with the multidisciplinary team to ensure care is delivered effectively and efficiently.
* Leads and coordinates the Department in the absence of the Departmental Manager.
* Disseminates information to staff e.g. Team Brief, Unit meetings; acts as a role model for the organisation and the nursing profession.
* Maintains NMC registration and ensures adherence to the NMC code of conduct.
* Promotes health education and advises on health promotion where necessary.
* Maintains high standards of care and initiates changes with the Departmental Manager as needed.
* Prepares duty rota, ensures appropriate staff cover and budget-conscious staffing.
* Monitors safe and effective use of equipment and supplies; manages the department budget.
* Informs nursing issues to the Departmental Manager; supports Endoscopy Service development and scheduling requests.
* Participates in workforce development, staff recruitment, induction, and supervision; maintains training records.
* Conducts meetings and orientates new staff; assists in investigation of complaints and draft responses.
* Orders stock and non-stock consumables; attends meetings in the Departmental Manager’s absence.
Research And Development Responsibilities
* Promotes nursing practice in line with relevant research; maintains awareness of evidence-based practice; contributes to research and development in the ward/department.
Audit, Quality And Risk Management Responsibilities
* Contributes to setting and monitoring standards of care; participates in quality initiatives and audits; maintains a safe environment and manages risks.
* Handles complaints per Trust policy; ensures infection control, COSHH and Health and Safety compliance.
* Keeps up-to-date with Trust policies and completes risk assessments within 24 hours of admission.
Resource Management Responsibilities
Maintains awareness of budgeting; assists in staffing assessments; undertakes clinical/shift management in absence of the Departmental Manager.
Qualifications
Essential: Registered Nurse on sub part 1 of the professional register; evidence of continuing education; NMC recognised mentorship qualification; degree or working towards; teaching and assessing qualification.
Desirable: Enhanced Care Modules; Leadership courses or working towards.
Experience
Essential: Experience in the specialty at Band 5; experience of staff and shift management; strong interpersonal skills; leadership and management skills; experience of complaints management.
Desirable: Significant knowledge and experience in the specialty; care of unstable surgical patients; care of patients with invasive lines.
Regulatory
