Offer description

About us Oakdale was established nearly twenty-five years ago and is highly regarded as a professional therapy provider. We are a not-for-profit community-based organisation and our team is united by a commitment to provide flexible, bespoke, evidence-based, and high-quality clinical services to meet the particular needs of each of our clients as well as the requirements of commissioners for an appropriate, collaborative, value-for-money service. The Oakdale Group provides a wide range of specialist assessments, including for autism, ADHD, and developmental trauma. Oakdale also provides a wide range of psychological therapies for children, young people, and adults. Many of our services are commissioned by the NHS, Local Authorities, and schools, and include services for NHS staff. Others are accessed by members of the public who pay for them privately, through medical insurance, or through our charitable arm. The Role Oakdale operates a Prescribing Service for children and adults who have a diagnosis of ADHD. The service became operational in September 2024 and now has an established non-medical prescribing team and is developing fast. As such, Oakdale is now looking for a Staff Nurse specialising in ADHD within Oakdale’s neurodevelopmental pathway. This is an exciting new development role which represents a great opportunity for NMC-registered nurses, both newly qualified nurses and more experienced, who have an interest in ADHD and are hoping to become Independent Non-Medical Prescribers. As a Staff Nurse within the ADHD Medication Service, you will be responsible for assessing new referrals of clients who have been diagnosed with ADHD, ensuring it is safe and appropriate for clients to trial ADHD medication. You will conduct medication reviews, both during titration and once clients are established on medication, and will support our Non-Medical Prescribers to make independent prescribing decisions for service users with ADHD, under the guidance of the Clinical Lead. You will play a crucial role in supporting the neurodevelopmental team, working with children, young people and adults. Your responsibilities will include providing continuous monitoring to ensure the best possible outcomes for service users. As you develop into the role (usually after around 12 months), you will be offered the opportunity to train as an Independent Non-Medical Prescriber. The service will provide the necessary support and supervision. Nurses who already hold the prescribing qualification will be able to access an accelerated route. Job Description You will need to be a qualified nurse who is registered with the NMC, and will ideally have experience of working in a specialist ADHD service with children and/or adults with ADHD. You may already hold a non-medical prescribing (V300) qualification, in which case we could offer you an accelerated route into an independent prescriber position within our service. Key Responsibilities: Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including psychology and consultant psychiatry, to deliver specialist clinical assessment and intervention services for ADHD to children, young people, adults, and their families. Have an understanding of the main side effects of stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD and use this knowledge to support safe prescribing and educate clients. Support safe and appropriate prescribing and management of controlled drugs and other medications, adhering to NICE guidelines, ensuring treatments are tailored to the individual needs of each service user. Develop knowledge in the pharmacokinetic profiles of both short- and long-acting ADHD medications, understanding how treatments may be adjusted to minimise adverse effects and maximise efficacy. Measure blood pressure, pulse, height and weight and perform ECGs. Interpret ECGs (with additional training). Have the necessary skills to assess and review mental health, clinical risk, social circumstances, and physical health of service users, in line with the NMC Code. Undertake medication reviews of clients who are being titrated on ADHD medication to ensure effectiveness, safety, and appropriateness of the prescribed interventions. Contribute to comprehensive medication management, including necessary physical health checks and monitoring. Liaise with clients and their families/carers as necessary to provide a safe and responsive service. This will include participating in the Duty system. Liaise with professionals in external services such as GPs, cardiologists, mental health services, schools, employers and social services to ensure a holistic approach to care. Support the transition of ADHD medication prescribing and monitoring to primary care through knowledge of Shared Care Protocol arrangements. Contribute to governance and audit processes, ensuring service delivery prioritises quality and upholds dignity, privacy, and respect for all service users. Provide accurate and timely performance data on service activities as required. Contribute to compliance with local policies such as Yellow Card reporting, monitoring MHRA drug safety updates, and addressing adverse drug reactions through appropriate reporting and remedial actions. Foster effective team collaboration within the multidisciplinary team, promoting and maintaining high professional standards. Support the development of junior staff, including health care assistants and student nurses, through mentorship and guidance. Perform additional clinical tasks as required to support the service. Person Specification Essential Registered Nurse with current NMC registration in mental health, learning disabilities, child or adult nursing. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with staff, patients, families, carers, and other professionals. Sound understanding of the normal parameters of physiological function and of indicators of worsening physical or mental health. Ability to establish effective links with other services and professionals. Proficient in clinical risk assessment and management. Proficient in using IT systems. Physically fit to perform duties relevant to the service area. Effective in prioritising workload, organising schedules, managing report writing, attending clinical meetings and assessing patients. Capable of managing distressing and emotional situations involving staff and patients, handling complaints, and addressing incidents. Knowledgeable of policies governing the area of work, supportive of organisational values, and demonstrates teamwork, punctuality, and flexibility. Desirable V300 prescribing qualification. Evidence of post-registration training in neurodevelopmental conditions. Ability to manage a caseload of patients with complex mental health needs. Knowledge of service-specific interventions.
