Talented People are proud to be partnering with a leading civil engineering and infrastructure organisation to recruit an experienced Senior Buyer.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially minded procurement professional to take a senior role within a dynamic business, supporting major projects and helping to drive value, efficiency, and supply chain performance.
The Role
Reporting to the Procurement Manager, the Senior Buyer will play a key role in managing procurement activities, supporting the wider team, and ensuring materials, plant, and services are delivered on time and within budget. You will also contribute to team leadership, supplier strategy, and continuous improvement across the procurement function.
Key Responsibilities
* Source new and alternative materials and suppliers to improve value and resilience
* Build strong relationships with suppliers, negotiating competitive rates
* Work closely with internal teams including Contracts and Estimating
* Support procurement of materials, plant, equipment, and services from schedules
* Extract and interpret material requirements from tender documentation
* Produce cost/value reports and lifecycle cost analysis for senior management
* Coordinate transfer of materials and plant between sites where required
* Deliver procurement solutions that demonstrate best overall value
* Obtain and evaluate quotations, ensuring compliance with specifications and delivery requirements
* Attend contract handover meetings and support project mobilisation
* Support the day-to-day running of the Procurement Department
* Deputise for the Procurement Manager when required
* Assist with planning, organising, and allocating team workloads
* Support training and development of team members, including apprentices
* Contribute to embedding sustainable procurement practices
Skills & Knowledge
* Strong negotiation and supplier management skills
* Ability to analyse data and produce clear, insightful reports
* Good understanding of material specifications within construction
* Knowledge of QHSE legislation and compliance requirements
* Experience managing or supporting team members
* Understanding of ISO management systems (ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001)
* Awareness of FSC & PEFC timber chain of custody systems (desirable)
Experience
* Proven experience in procurement and supply chain management
* Experience within civil engineering or construction markets (desirable)
Technical Skills
* Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Experience with systems such as Procore and Evision
Qualifications & Training
* HNC or equivalent (preferred)
* Membership of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) – desirable
* Full UK driving licence
* Training in sustainability and leadership (advantageous)
