We are looking for a trustee to develop our volunteering strategy, as we create a green and blue corridor through the restoration of two Staffordshire canals, for the benefit of our local and wider community
What difference will you make?
The Volunteer Resources Trustee plays a key part in our future success with overall responsibility for managing volunteers. This includes strategies, plans, regulatory matters, training, safeguarding, records and practical activities such as inductions. The Volunteer Resources Trustee also has a duty to guide and advise the Board on all issues concerning volunteers and to support the Board to function effectively.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for someone with volunteer management experience or perhaps someone with a background in human resources, to build on our volunteering strategy. Skills An understanding of the volunteering issues facing the Trust. An understanding of the needs of volunteers. Operates effectively at high levels and successfully guides and advises Board members on volunteer issues. Good verbal, written and presentational communication skills. Good interpersonal skills and able to work well with a range of people. Good ICT skills and comfortable in using basic computer applications. Competencies and knowledge Understands the role of the Volunteer Resources Trustee. Attention to detail. Able to prioritise work and work well under pressure. Experience in managing volunteers Understands health and safety in order to ensure good practice throughout the Trust's work. Awareness of equality and diversity issues and the need for all Board members, volunteers, members and other stakeholders to be treated fairly and equally. Attributes Works in accordance with and demonstrates the Trust's values. High standards of probity and integrity. Self-motivated, shows energy, enthusiasm and flexibility. What will you be doing?
The positive value of canal restoration is generally recognised and as a result there are a large number of restoration projects being undertaken in many areas of the country. The Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust is one of the more active, effective and successful organisations. We have already overcome major obstacles such as the construction of the M6 Toll Road which threated to cut off the routes of both our canals and could have prevented us from completing restoration of both canals. Following battles with officials and difficult negotiations we eventually won through and today when driving along the toll road you can pass under our aqueduct. We have a large membership with many members actively involved. Working parties are out restoring canal structures and adjacent green spaces at various locations almost every day. We are particularly proud of our work with young people. Working in partnership with local colleges and with support from local contractors, through restoration we provide opportunities for apprentices to learn practical construction skills. Our Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme programme provides opportunities for young people to undertake their volunteering element and focuses on environmental and biodiversity activities. In 2019 our work was recognised nationally through receiving The Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
